Subaru flat-four turbo-diesel engine

Post by Nigel A. Skeet »

The Subaru, 2•0 litre turbo-diesel, boxer engine, was first available for cars sold in Great Britain & Europe, in January 2008. Here are some links and stories, I have been referencing these past four years:

According to one British motoring magazine (Autocar, 30th August 2005, page 21), it stated that the forthcoming Subaru flat-four diesel engines, were to be available in two displacements; these being 2•0 litre (150 bhp & 251 ft.lb) and 2•2 litre (180 bhp & 306 ft.lb), but no information was given about peak power & peak torque RPMs, whether they were turbocharged (I cannot imagine small displacement, high-speed diesel engines, developing this much power, without some form of supercharging!), and if so, the turbo-boost pressures being utilised.

I recently came across a ¼-broadsheet-page feature, about the new Subaru Legacy with 2•0 litre, flat-four, aluminium alloy, turbocharged diesel engine (1998 cc, 16-valve, 86•0 mm bore & stroke, 253 ft.lb @ 1,800 rpm & 148 bhp @ 3,600 rpm, red-lines @ 4,500 rpm). This is said to give 49•6 mpg EU Combined Cycle fuel consumption and 151 g/km carbon dioxide emissions.
