Re: Electronic ignition upgrade
GERHARD73,
I used the Bruck - Vacuum Advance (SVDA) Distributor in some applications and for some reason it failed twice brand spanking new from the box...so might want to give that brand a skip. Not saying they are bad, but zero luck with them. I could not figure out why, but after that I switched to Bosch and voila......gone was the issue.
They would simply just stop working but the TCI Electronic module would be fine...the coil was fine and 3.3 OHM ... compatible with the distributor.......was stumped!!

Re: Electronic ignition upgrade
Slak,
The long version:
Let me tell you the truth how I test a TCI...the full story and remember that I am not as technically minded as some...I am a paint, detail and accessories guy.
Baja cut out right in the middle street of traffic...lekker? Towed Baja home...
I tested my TCI on a friends beetle....but since he was not available earlier in the day I went out and bought another TCI first since the Goldwagen was 40 meters from where I was stranded ....not entirely sure and a serious head ache ensuing in the sweltering heat . I even bought another coil with the new TCI. "We always need spares" is how I justified the expenditure....and remember...not technically minded!!!
Various combinations were tried..10 for effort here.
%...no luck.
Later that day when Baja was at home.....Old TCI and new TCI both worked on my Friend's beetle...Dizzy no. 1...not so much!!!
New dizzy no.2 went in Baja ran like a champ...2 days...pop same problem...new TCI(Third TCI) that came with dizzy no.2 still fine......three TCI's that start my friends beetle....two dizzy that doesn't want to fire the test engine!!
Kind of the expensive way to go about things....but who wants to stand and sukkel in 39-41 deg C weather just after coming from the gym?
Bosch SVDA goes in...joy...6 months...no issues...the natural assumption for me was that the brand might have issues since the Baja has not proven to have electrical problem..more than a coincidence I think?

Re: Electronic ignition upgrade
GERHARD73/Slak,
My new Bosch dizzy came from the US ordered from Texasaircooled... What is even more humiliating is that I forgot about Mr. Texasaircooled and the grief he caused me 2 years before ..when I order Fast fab sills...lets just say It got ugly....but I got the dizzy although very, very late...he was even nice enough to send me a brochure...LOL...like that would ease things over!!!
I reckon the person that IMPI recommended in threads before mine, is the one....he would not steer you wrong...
Enough of me high-jacking this thread...
Greetings,

Re: Electronic ignition upgrade
Yes Gareth is a standup guy he uses his own product on his vehicle, it is simple straight forward
and easy to use and his module is also the cheapest one i know of
Bernard Stander from the Aircooled Hooligans just mentioned the other day the he has had it in one
of his cars for about a year and the points has virtually no wear on it and his car gets used daily

Re: Electronic ignition upgrade
You can buy the beetle distributor which are electronic, plug and play. I have taken a 2.1 VW microbus dizzy, made the slot where the plastic plug fits into bigger, bought a golf electronic dizzy, took the hall sensor out a fit it into the 2.1 dizzy. It is 89 976 km been in my 1974 baywindow with a 1600 single port engine which push up to 135 km/h. I you do not believe me, you can ask Muderick.

If you use golf application, which is the Bosch setup the u must use the red Bosch electronic coil or the red Hugo coil which is the following part number, PN 111006.
