1976 Bay 2.0l not Idling

Post by boxerulez »

Hey guys,

Couple of questions.

2.0l flatfour twincarb configuration.
- i only see air/fuel screw on the carb to the left of engine, nothing on the right. Can I assume that the one on the left regulates the mixture to both carbs?
- idle valve ( the carb on the right )
this idle valve was seized up, did not open and close with ignition.
I soaked it in carb cleaner and blew it out with the compressor. It now clicks open and closed with current

- after all this the engine would still not idle.

I decided to adjust the air screw (the bigger one of the 2) to raise the idle speed. < i am no carb setting guru > and started her up, she idles for a few seconds and dead again.
I give the screw 3 full rotations ( to open ) now she idles

- while idling i brought the idle back down as far as possible (until she stalled)
-opened the air up again a little and let her run at that speed.

15 minutes without stalling and I switched her off.

Any input from the forum?

I am assuming that this setting on the carb is not the correct solution however it is keepin her idling for now. I need to know what should I look at to get her running without the carb setting that i applied?

Please help guys.

Check for possible vacuum leaks. Especially the vacuum line to the brake booster at the front, and the flexible pipe at the booster.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

What carb's have you got on there, and are they a matched pair.????

Also do you have a balance pipe between the two manifolds, and are there NO leaks.????

I will check the Vacuum line to the booster, i failed to realise that there is a booster in there. Also its the stock carbs for the 2.0l type 4 engine. there is a balance pipe between the 2 manifolds.

are matched carbs supposed to be identical? They arent identical looking but they fit with the standard air cleaner.

They should be the a left and right version of the same carb.
Both 32/34-PICT /3 or similar but both,
I think you have 34 PICT / 3 , if so I have a comprehensive Tune - up instruction for these carb's should you want.
Something I got off Google.
Maybe I should post it here.

They would be 32-34 PDSIT 2/3

My first suggestion would also be to check for vacuum leaks on the carbs and manifolds. The central idling circuit makes it very prone to idling issues if there are leaks.

How is the condition of the rest of system? Eg.shafts, links, any play? Most twin carb systems I have seen show there 30 odd years of use. A full carburetor overhaul would be in order if there is any form of play, don't even bother to try and balance the carbs if this is the case.

Have you checked your motor? A dropped valve seat or burnt valves will cause idling issues. Check your compression and see if it is within spec.

Did not have any time to work on her this weekend and had to deliver her to the bodyshop today, was a hell of a drive over there. Not fun at all, no power, stalling, electrics fooling around on me. Well let them do their magic, and we will get the engine attended to as soon as its back.
