Re: My 356.
Right, so, decided to stop procrastinating, and Mr T is hussling me, (Which is a good thing). So reversed Speedy into the garage, and jacked him up high, and I'm 3/4's of the way done with getting the engine out.. Just ran out of talent, and need my kid to help hold one bolt by the starter. The entire top of the motor is out, shroud, Genie, Carbs, etc. so, tomoz, should be able to wiggle it out, hopefully without having to remove the exhaust, and then I can get to cleaning it up, and preparing for the new bits.
It's gonna look the Biz, and also hopefully hop along a little more friskily thanks to Mr T's handy head-work.

I find a small vice grip, will be less complainant to help the old man, then the kids normally are........acpaterson wrote:........ Just ran out of talent, and need my kid to help hold one bolt by the starter......

Re: My 356.
Naa he's a good kid, doesn't know enough, but does what I ask him.. Anyway, it's out.. Motor's out and on the floor.. Was a tight fit dropping it out this body, but we're progressing along.. Motor's very wet, substantial leaks. but I'll clean it up and see what it looks like, anything obvious. Mr T will also be here Saturday to cast a wise eye over proceedings..
Will take some pics weekend.

Re: My 356.
Project Motorwerks on the go.
Tony came round Saturday Morning after having spent a few hours building me some more efficient heads. So I got going.
Motor out. JUST managed to fit this out from under the body.. My pre-painted up shroud. And with the Chrome cover from FFR, and my repainted Matt black Alternator. Tony's nice new Heads, torqued and ready to set gaps and close up. Cleaned, and painted casing. Tinware, cleaned and sprayed. Tappet covers. Other bits. So, awaiting some bits I need, Oil cooler, Strainer and plate, and I can start re-assembly..
Thanks again Tony, awesome skills and great Company.
Cheers
Alan

Re: My 356.
Motoring along SWIFTLY....
I found this thread on the Samba, hopefully no negativity will come from sharing this, as I think it's a A t Z of engine rebuilding, (WITH PICTURES) for us dom, practical ouens.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... d882be1540
So, flew to Shelleys at lunch, got a 2nd hand new air cooler, which is for sure not holed. Cleaned it up, and using "Glue Devil Greypremium performance gasket maker", I put the two oil seals back, and bolted it up. Looks good.
Also dropped in at FFR on my way home, picked up a new Sieve and heavy duty, thick round sump plate. VERY nice stuff.. Cannot believe how butchered my old round plate and sieve was. No wonder the car leaked. So they're in the bin.
Put the paper gaskets on with the grey gunk, and managed to eventually get this whole lot onto those 6 bolts straight, without damaging anything.. You need to understand the motor is currently sitting on top of two cinder blocks, so my room to work in, is approx 20 cm's.. urgh.. Eventually got the 6 nuts on with the supplied crush washers, and tightened up. Have grey stuff well sealing the entire surround of the plate. If this leaks oil, then fukit.
Also got the fuel pump on and oil pump plate with similar, positive results. I guess time will tell, but for now, it's looking clean and neat.
I also set the valve clearances on the new heads, in prep to close up the tappet covers. All seems spot on. I LOVE my Aluminium Pulley with red signage on, looks awesome, and certainly will be straighter and more acurate than the original POS I hammered off.
So, gonna fit the covers, and the rear tin, and then I think, we're going back in. I will assemble all the other tin and parts from the engine bay.
Oh, also cleaning up the engine bay so it's all black, and clean. There's a complete piece of rubber whick mounts onto the lip in that engine bay and sits ontop of the engine tin, and makes a very good seal to separate the hot air under from the cool air on the top. Time will tell..

Re: My 356.
Done, and running great. Just requires another Carb Balancing, but for now, motor's finished..
Tony's headwork is VERY noticeable, and the car certainly pulls much better, so glad I went this route. Just need t balance carbs again, and it's sorted for Summer.
Last job required, the frikkin roof fitment.. This is going t be an issue, as I need to modify the mounting point to hinge, allowing the roof bows to sink down into the rear area and be below the body. More on that when have the energy.
