LOL! Reminds me of a good friend of mine, a highly intelligent and capable civil engineer. His studies were paid via a Spoornet bursary (SA Railways in those days), and after qualifying he had to work for Spoornet for several years to pay them back. He had a favourite saying: "If I had intended to actually do any work I wouldn't have got a job with the railways!"

In fact he did work hard and add value; one of his works was that helicopter landing pad off the coast of Simonstown.

Did he buy an engine from this advertiser? Please share specifics.

The first time I saw this guy's ads on gumtree I emailed and asked him to explain how he can sell a "fully rebuilt" engine for less than the price of the machining required in an engine build. His response was that because he sends bulk work to the engineering shop, they give him a better rate than I can get. Oooohhhhhkaaaaaay ... and what about the cost of all the parts needed in a rebuild?

He did an engine swap for a recon motor. I showed him the thread this morning, I think he's going to join the forum and share his experience.

This thread reminds me if an amusing evening I experienced a couple of years ago.

A notoriously cheap friend of mine had expressed his disbelief that I had spent about R24,000 building a 1776 engine for one of my buses. He implied that I was stupid and had been ripped off. At the time he needed a rebuilt engine for his double cab.

A short while later he called me to tell me he'd found someone who would sell him a "rebuild" for R3.5k. I told him he'd be wasting his money and he would be disappointed. He was still keen to check it out and asked me to accompany him. So one evening we drove out on the N12 past Lenasia and got lost trying to follow the directions. We eventually waited at the Randfontein crossing while the vendor drove out to find us and guide us to his "workshop".

When he pitched up he was driving a scruffy baja bug that backfired massively every time he lifted off the throttle, emitting huge flames out of the exhaust. As we followed him in the dark to an area of plots the baja bug broke down. After a few minutes of fiddling he got it started again and we followed his flame trail to an overgrown plot with a few scrap looking Beetles visible. We went into his workshop where, surrounded by piles of dirty old parts all over the floor, a newly rattlecanned sub-assembly was sitting on the workbench. A closer inspection showed it was a 1200 case. There was no sign of any new parts in the workshop, nor was there any used packaging from new engine parts.

The self-proclaimed engine builder swore he had built scores of engines and had “never had a comeback”. By now even my cheap friend was convinced the guy was a bullshit artist. We had a look at a Baja bug under construction in the workshop; it had a diesel engine from an Isuzu bakkie and large sections of the bodywork were being customised with chicken wire and fibreglass.

If you’re ever tempted to buy a cheapie rebuild, a walk around the engine builder’s workshop would be quite enlightening ...

There are still lots of "engine rebuilders" out there offering allegedly reconditioned engines for less than the cost of parts or machining. The one below is a regular on gumtree. I once asked them how they can sell a rebuild for less than the cost of parts and machininh, and got a BS response about how they get "bulk discount" for those things, which they pass on to their customers ... Has anyone on these forums bought an engine from these guys?
