Do any of you have a sticker like this on your Fleetline bulkhead, or other '70s VW?

Any idea what it is?

It reads 'card' and '236'.

It's not a model designation.

Thanks.
I have that sticker and the tyre pressures still on two Fleetlines. I'll take some pics and send them with the rest when I get a new PC.

I believe the "Card 236" sticker referred to something like a service data card. Similar stickers were used on baywindow buses as well. IIRC there is one on my Autovilla that I can photograph when I get it back from IMPI.

Thanks.

It's quite odd how much relative information has been lost over the years, especially when compared to the bulk of knowledge that exists for far earlier, and rarer, vehicles.

I'm looking forward to sifting through your VIN information. I'm making good progress with the decoding, but need to enlarge the pool of plates.

I'm still looking to expand the registry, in order to improve the VIN decoding project.

If you haven't already sent me your VIN/s, please consider doing so. I've made great progress so far, but am limited by the small pool of information on my side.

Thanks.

I have about 12 VIN plates for you, but both home PCs chose the same time to die, so I can only send them when I've bought a new PC.

Did you buy them from Sahara?

Government runs on Guptaware and they're constantly a problem. ;)

Due to intense work demands, this project fell by the wayside, for some time, despite the odd investigation, here and there.

It it still alive though.

Recently, John Lemon has been in touch, with queries relating to the same subject. We're now assisting each other.

I have more than 2/3 of the VIN plates decoded now. The major bugbear is still the colour coding used. It doesn't line up with any published chart that John or myself have thus far located.

If you can assist, with further information, or the inclusion of Fleetline (split or Bay') VIN plates & info' to the project, please get in touch.

From memory, VW used same colours for Fleetlines/Brasilias as they did for other VW products of the corresponding production year.

Maybe colour code info from other models of the same year could be helpful in decyphering Fleetline data?

On the German baywindows, (1975), upholstery details were stamped on serial number plate, like 67/67, which meant light brown. Code 68/67 was dark brown seats and light brown side panels. This was higher-spec seats, maybe the more plain upholstered/ "entry level" seats of same color had a different code?

Paint codes were stamped on a separate plate. Did Fleetlines/Brasilias also have this separate little plate?

Paint codes for 70's seems to differ from earlier codes. As in "code 05" from 75 may have nothing in common with that same code used in the 60's.

Code 02 was light yellow/beige in 74
Code 05 was 0live green in 75. (Code 050 was bottom 05 green combined with 0 sand white top).
Code 03 was light blue in 75. (030 if upper was white).
Code 06 light yellow/beige in 77. (Slightly darker than code 02 of 74).

If you have any more info on Uitenhage colour codes please add here:

Dawie,

You rock! :D

Thank you. This has helped tremendously. It's solved a number of mysteries.

I'm now very close to having the entire plate decoded.

Tony: Many thanks for the info' on your bus. I have added it into my sample group.

Kind regards,

Nic

Thanks Dawie. That 67/67 on so many Fleetline VIN plates makes many people swear their Fleetline is a 1967 model. Thanks for explaining that one!

My either '57 or '58 splitbus' Vin plate says that the paint code is 213. It also states that it was built in Uitenhage. Some years ago I phoned the vw museum to try to get the right colour but they had no record of the paint code. The guy who did the painting, polished the original paint inside the body panel and thats about as close as one can get. will attach a pic of pait code 213. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for getting in touch, Guy. :)

Unfortunately, as your bus is not a Fleetline, it has no relevance to this project. The information gleaned from it does not tie in with Fleetline specifics.

Kind regards,

Nic
