Re: Tyres
Or go buy one tyre and if it doesnt fit properly, keep it as the spare.
The last thing you want it a 40yo spare tyre that pops after 2km...

Re: Tyres
Did you phone around substantially? It's not so ideal that you are going to use a tyre with a smaller diameter either now.
I recently bought a full set of 165/80R15's this year but they did cost quite a bit more than the ones you mention.

Re: Tyres
I did and actually did a compare on diameter with 185/65 R 15 and they are more like the originals diameter wise. I think the problem is just these are a bit wider and they might hit on the sides when turning.
But will keep you guys posted once they are on and rolling.

Re: Tyres
The 165/65/15's are the ideal tyre but they are a lil more expensive and harder to find. At the moment on my beetle the 195/65 rub slightly not major. if i was using the 195/65 for so long the 185/65 should do.

Re: Tyres
Around to 60's Porsche warned about the dangers of using tyres wider than rim width in rearward-weight biased vehicles, and especially if using swing axle suspension-(356).
Problem is tyre goes "trapezium shaped" when looking from front or rear. (Short line of trapezium is rim width and long line tread width.)
When cornering near the limit, or swerving to avoid an obstacle, contact area suddenly changes to now mostly making contact near sidewall area. (Because of trapezium shape). Causing sudden tailswing.
Going the other way- (slightly wider rim than tyre), did not cause problems in tests, and even helped in some situations. Although, in off-road conditions, sidewalls could be more exposed to damage.
If going small diameter low profile tyres, also decide if you will be happy with higher fuel consumption and noise during highway conditions...
Using too wide tyres on a light front end can be dangerous in the wet- (aquaplaning). So Porsche went to wider rear rims and tyres at the rear. Overall diameter is kept similar by using lower profile of wider tyre at rear, so tyre height stays same as smaller width fronts.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Re: Tyres
So i bought the 185/65 tyres and this is how they fit on the rims. Pic of rim on the beetle is how it looks fitted but note the wheel nuts are not tightened in the pic thats why the tyre looks abit skew.Once fitted on proper and test driven will update.
