Looking for a Baywindow (found)

Post by brucet »

Hi All,

Recently joined the forum and have been lurking for a while.

I am based in Johannesburg and am looking for a Baywindow. I dont know much about them but plan it to be a family project with my two daughters who have been bugging me for years to do one with them.
Ultimately I would like a 1972 (as its the year I was born) but have had no luck finding one yet.

I have come across a all white 1979 2.0 ltr in not so great condition but it starts and runs. I know its not really a big collectors option but thats not really why im interested in it. Interior is still all original with some minor tears/holes in the vinyl, roof lining needs to be replaced and there is minor surface rust in the usual places. It needs lots of cleaning up. I am considering making an offer but would like to know the following first please:
- What would it cost to rebuild the motor and gearbox?
- Is there anything I should check before making an offer
- I know its hard to say without seeing the bus but what sort of price do these go for?
- does anyone know of any for sale for someone, with a R40k budget for the purchase?

Some people maybe horrified but this would be the look i would go for (although this is a low light):

Perhaps if I am successful in finding one, I could do a build thread on this forum if there is any interest.

Any advice or assistance will be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Brucet.

If you want a bus like in the pic you attached, you will have to increase your budget to over R200 000.

If you plan on doing everything yourself, ie, rebuilding the motor, gearbox, suspension, bodywork and the interior and all of this in a stock standard form, (no modifications), your R40k wont even be enough for the parts and materials. Then you still need to buy the bus.......

Thank you Sean.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression and I know R40k goes no where now a days...... the 40k is for the purchase of the bus only. I plan on doing a lot of it myself once we have decided what we want to do and with some outsourcing of work, like body work which i dont enjoy at all..... I have only built a golf 1 two door from an 1100 to 2.0, Golf 2 Gti 16v turbo drag/play car, my current e36 turbo BMW race car and I am busy with an e46 GTR race car, so absolutely no experience with these buses but im sure it cant be that difficult......i hope!! :)
I had considered purchasing a "finished" bus but this will be a family project with my girls who are convinced they want to make it a hippy type bus with flowers and peace signs all over it hence me saying it doesnt have to be a collectible type bus.. :)

Here are my two projects at the moment. Totally unrelated to the bus but just to illustrate what I have done and am doing, so not scared of a bit of money or work:

Here is the one I am considering making an offer on at the moment, hence the R40k suggested mark. It runs apparently and is a 2.0 '79 model. What more or less is it worth?

I would suggest R10 000 for that bus at max. It is possible that it runs or starts, but it can still be stuffed and need a full rebuild. Most VW's out there are stuffed.

I see quite a bit of rust too. New panels would be ideal to replace the rusted areas.

What about papers? I see that bus has old plates. It could have thousands outstanding in arrears.

wow ok thats much lower than what I thought.....thank you.
It has papers.
It will cost me R3500 to get it registered in my name and everything up to date apparently.
I have not seen it in person yet so cant comment on the rust but apparently the only rust it has is what you can see in the pics and underneath is rust free......I will be going to look at it so will check out how much rust it has.

Went and looked at the bus (not me a mate) and I think the guy is asking too much for it. So the search continues.

Thank you for the advice so far.
