Help with identifying an engine

Hi, I am looking for help in identifying an engine. It was sold to me as coming from a bus, and was being modified for use in an aeroplane. They said it was a 2 or 2.1 liter. I now want to rebuild it but would need a manual. I attach a few pics that .

If I hazard an educated guess, I'll go with a '79-'83 type 4 engine, 2L

2.1 was watercooled, so its definitely not a 2.1

From what we can see in the pics, Tony is probably correct. The engine number (or at least the prefix) will allow us to be certain.

Serial number seems to begin with S1. I cannot find that on any resource. I will try again tomorrow to get a better look at the number, but it is underneath the engine. Someone said there should be one where the alternator goes. Well, this one has no alternator on (;>

Where can one get rebuild manuals? Should I try Haynes, or are there any on line?

the engine number is visable from the top, near the pulley (fan) on the right side of the case centerline.
ignore the S1 (SF) after that you'll likely have either CU or CJ - its that letter config that fig is asking for

Answer from VWAircooled.net: That originally was a 2.0L aircooled Type 4 engine, 1980-83 1/2. 71mm stroke 94mm bore.

Now, where can one find an overhaul manual?

I have several used manuals for sale, covering type4 engines. I have Autobooks, Intereurope and Haynes; take your pick or take them all. PM me.

Hi Fig,

Thanks for the offer. We are awaiting other decisions before we commit to rebuilding or selling, but will let you know if we need the manuals.

Best regards,
