is engine rebuild quote is reasonable ?

Post by SPbug »

hi folks at aircooled vw .
i habve a 1977 SP beetle
here’s the quote i need an opinion on to establish if it is reasonable in all areas .
i have already got 1835 cc pistons & sleeves .
i have bought the linkages for 2 x 40 webers
i have yet to buy the 40 webers and the air cleaners
i also have a mildly hotter crank and the xxxx [ i’m not sure what they are called ] have already been ground
this quote reflects a single carb conversion to my 1977 sp 1600 beetle [ i have changed my mind and wish to go twin carb again ]

* the sub assembly amount feels very heavy as we’ll be buying a new aluminium block
**the brake system quote feels heavy

please tell me what you think

it is a bit rich.
The 28k for the engine build should include the cleaning and painting of the block and parts.
since you are supplying the crank, pistons, sleeves and cam I would put the total build (incl supply of the 2nd hand head) in at around 20k, excl the new case.
And, why would you paint a new case? Keep it clean and bare, it looks better and cools better since it doesnt have a layer of paint insulating it, plus that saves you R1400.

I cant comment on the price of the rest, but if you are going to that level of works (new MC, new lines, 10k to fix drums), why dont you upgrade to disc brakes on all 4 corners - its a much better and much more reliable setup and will cost you around the same, maybe 5k more, excl new rims and tyres.

This is VERY high. I would get some other quotes, as suggested.

These guys are definitely ambitious with their quote.

I bought a new alli case just over a year ago for R8000. Checked the price a month ago, and they now go for R13 000 (vs the R15 500 the builder quoted).

They further charge R3980 to install the engine, and "fit accessories". There must be a lot of accessories...NOT!

They also quote R500 for "Air filters", and a further R1000 for filters. Seems like a lot of money for a lot of filters...

They are not saying much about what exactly you are getting for the R28 370 "rebuild". No mention if any new parts are included. If you were getting new parts, it would be good, but a completely different story if they simply use your old parts.

R10 640 for the brake repair is completely unrealistic.

Too many worrying things here. I would walk away...
