Blast from the past

I found this a blast from the past on the old strip roads in Southern Rhodesia.

Actually a Lola T70 Mk3B. :-)
And I also remember those strip roads.. We toured Rhodesia back in 1971 in a Jag Mk10, it was wider than the strip roads.. First time I ever saw a TV set as well..

John Love was my hero, (and he had a lovely daughter)we lived right next to the Grand Central race track, where he used to race, with the likes of Big Sarel van der Merwe the father of young supervan.

Used to love watch him contorted his big frame into the DKW junior.

Here is an extract of his best issue with his son ...

Sarel van der Merwe Senior -
Accomplished DKW Racing Driver!
"Like Father Like Son!"

Sarel Junior's Birthday!

Sarel van der Merwe was an accomplished DKW racing driver. Like
everybody else, at the time, he had to modify and build the cars himself.
He had retired from active racing by now and his favourite DKW
racing car was parked behind his house.

However, as Sarel junior's 18th birthday was approaching and Sarel
junior could hardly wait to obtain his drivers licence, father was
concerned that his son may have aspirations on his racing car.

DKW Special
Built and Raced by
Sarel van der Merwe Senior

This he planned to prevent at all cost, so the day before Sarel junior's
18th birthday he phoned Coenraad Spamer to offer him his beloved
DKW, provided he came to fetch it immediately and would return the
engine to him the next day, so he could mount it in a glass case. He
was not prepared to part with his DKW engine, which had won him
so many races.

The good old days

Thanks Alan for the correction,I Knew John Love and his son Royce quite well his daughter was Judy if I remember,John had a bad accident at Kyalami I think it was where the crash barrier went through his car and he had that piece mounted on the wall in Hillside house.I use to do business with him in the 70s.I also new Dave Charlton as he raced his F1 up there and in recent yrs before he passed on he use to ride with us at the BMW Bike Club on breakfast runs.Paddy Driver could keep you talking all day about his times and cars,he had about 10 garages all full of old immaculate cars and spares.I use to buy American car spares from him just down the road by Kyalami. Uncle Ferdie Radell was also involved with John Loves racing if my memory serves me right.TV we use to have a bike rally up there and we had a few South African bikers staying with us and when they saw the TV that was it they stayed the night watching TV. Them good old days.

John Love was Mainly running Cooper Climax or Lotus Cooper Climax cars, with a few Lola's mixed in.

Was at Kyalami the day John pushed his car across the line to take 2nd place in the Grand Prix.

Him and Dave Charlton did not sit next to the same fire, and this had to do with motor racing.

Dave Carlton lived at the intersection with Olifandsfontein Road road and the R55 in Blue Hills

Being in the Halfway House area, everybody know everybody else and a lot of fun was had by all.

Thanks for the "Call back the past "moment Terry.
