This carb 36/40 pdsit was not used on any VW vehicles offically sold in this country.
It was used locally by some older Mercedes and BMW cars.

Our local vw412 cars retained the 1700 twin carb 34pdsit engines in basic version, and D-jet injection in "LE" version, until the last one was made here.

German production of 412 cars (1974), and some 914 cars 1974 and 75), came with 1800 twin carbed engines. The basic German 412 1800 used 36/40 pdsit with 28mm venturi and 7.8:1 compression, 75hp. The "high performance" version of industrial type 4 1800 engines also used those twin carbs. But lower compression for in case lower octane fuel was used. Basic 1800 type 4 industrial had single carb with heated manifold.

The German "412S" 1800 and 914- 1800 cars had those 40pdsit carbs with 30mm venturis, 8.6:1 compression, different cam, and made 85hp at 5000 rpm. Usa version of 412/914 -1800 had l-jetronic, emission control add-on parts, low compresson to use low octane usa fuel, and made less power. As said, these were not officially sold in South Africa.

Meaning of "36/40" is...
It can be made as either 36mm or 40mm. Using the same main carb body, bottom "throttle body" part comes in 36mm and 40mm. Venturi comes out when removing throttle body.

Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).
