Pan Number.

Post by Michael Bonthuys »

Hi All, I am a newbie on this forum and would like to know if anyone can tell me if vw pans were made in South Africa at all. If not
then how do you decipher the number. Reason is that I have a buggy which I had a very hard time getting on to my name because the motor was changed and the previous owner did not re-register at Post Office. I have just bought a bakkie type body and pan which I am repairing but the number
on the registration certificate does not match the one on the pan. It matches the one on the body which is on a tag riveted to the body. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated :zhelp:

Not sure if I have the question right.

You have two cars, one a Buggie, and one a bakkie on a pan.

The Buggie is registered but the PO has changed the engine.

Is this right so far ???

The 2nd is the Bakkie body and pan. with a matching number on the body tag, registered.

The Buggie is easy, you take the engine to the police clearance in Korsten, and they will give you a clearance certificate to take to the post office to fix the papers, that is as long as the motor is not stolen.

As some VW Beetle pans did not have numbers stamped on the tunnel at the back seat, the body builders gave the new body a tag with identification name and number and this was used to register these kit cars, making it a lot easier. they also used Police numbers on some pans.

So if you go to register the bakkie body, you show them the body tag and they will then clearance the combination on that number.

afaik

Thanks for your reply Herman. The first Buggy is a shortened wheelbase which is completely sorted out and on the Enatis system. It is the bakkie type that is going to give me a hard time. I have the registration paper and the last licence purchased which was 2017. I bought the body and pan in Stilfontein in North West Free State from a guy who rode it on his brothers name and who might have scrapped it. I am sure if I can obtain the scrapping certificate it will make things a whole lot easier. Trying to locate the original owner is the problem. I will however try your suggestion and see what the result is. Once again Thank You.

Good Day all in the dubs family,
I am on the lookout for a long wheel base pan with a registration. I have a bakkie type body which I would like
to build up but it seems as if I am going to run into a brick wall with numbers. I have put new floors into the pan I have
but I have no papers for it and cannot trace the original owner to get it onto my name. Any help or suggestions?
