High end model T4’s came with disk brakes all round.

The T5 is also disks but they are all round substantially bigger and beefier than a T4.

Thanks Sean,

So my assumption was right, I should get T5 boost and MC for MeFusco.

Forgive me Herman,..for jumping in here ?
Questuin,......'70 model type2 bay single cab,.....son's. Is in need of a discbrake conversion in front. Now I believe from '72 onwards they are all fitted with it. Now,....is it possible to fit the complete stubaxle from a later model?

Up to 72 No Disk brakes, Yes the early 72 Bay had small disks and no Booster, but the later had Big Disks and booster brakes.

If you going to go through the effort, go for a late bay front beam with Big disks and booster brakes MC

The booster is also fitted to the beam.

I did fit a late bay beam complete into the 72 bay with no major changes to bus or beam.

Yes had to do a bit of brake linkage changes, and run a vacuum pipe from the engine manifold.

and also fitted one into the Split bus Fleetline with changes to the beam, not the bus.

Best changes I have made to both buses.

you can see it in the bay and Fleetline Threads

Good luck

Hi Haans. I just saw a video on YouTube called "VW BAY WINDOW BUS disc brake conversion AC Industries". It might be worthwhile to check it out.

This is incorrect.

Disk brakes started in August 1970 for the 1971 model and the booster was optional.

The disks are not smaller in diameter to the later version. The 1971 and 72 brakes do differ to the later setup, but by no means inferior or less effective.

To answer your question Haans, you can change the complete stub axle and leave the rest of the beam. This is the complete setup, ie stub axle, calipers, backing plates, disks etc that you will attach to the ball joints. You must remember that the disks use a different master cylinder as well. Then also note that your old beam wont have the mounting bracket for the booster. There is a different master cylinder again between disks with or without booster.

Sean is correct its not the disk thats bigger but the calipers and thicker pads, bit of a miss type.

Thats why its easier to change the whole beam, booster, MC and all.
