OK Tom, I owe you a beer. I'll owe you 2 if you can make a simpler drawing of how to connect a rev counter.

Ill make it more simple.

Just bring your car and rev counter over to my shop and we will get it going. Easier for me to do than to write.

But I hope you are not wanting to fit one to your beetle.

Difference between VDO -"SP", and universal VDO revcounter:

Typical VDO universal revcounters, (not "S.P".), are "voltage sensing". Separate wire needed from points to gauge. Sensing voltage swings between 12V and chassis when points switches. Typically senses terminal marked "1" on coil. Some electronic modules have dedicated output pin that triggers revcounter. Some newer types intended for diesels senses alternator pulses.

"VDO SP revcounter": Current sensing. Positive black wire from ignition switch goes to terminal marked "+" on revcounter. Terminal marked "15" on revcounter goes to coil terminal 15. Terminal marked "-12V" on revcounter goes to chassis earth.

(Designed so that no extra wire is needed to the back. Current from ignition switch, (black wire), simply passes in series through revcounter on it's way to the +/ terminal "15" on the coil. Via existing black wire.)

Similar system were used by some other makes like Smiths.
