Schwimmwagen

Post by Pine »

Straight out of WWII, the VW Type 166. It was quickly nick named Schwimmwagen (swimming car) and there were about 15.000 made. For propulsion in the water the car was equipped with a retractable propeller connected to the crank shaft of the engine. Top speed in the water was about 8km/h and the front wheels acted as a rudder. Air cooled engine, and 4WD. Why the guys at Wolfsburg with the white coats and thick glasses never made a civilised version, remains a mystery...

Was checking out the feature in one of the pom mags, it featured one of these and it looked real grand, only Kak thing it mentioned that they only had a life span of something like 6 weeks before they got blown to smithereens, shame.

Hi Pine
I have one of the most amazing illustrations of the Schwimmwagen. I got it from my Dad who got it whilst we lived in Wolfsburg back in '68. My Dad was Regional Director at VW for years, anyway this book is about A3 size, has see through pages and as you page through the book you literally peel away layers of the vehicle, I could try and scan it but one would lose the effect of seeing through the pages. Would love to share it with you guys that are interested any advise, what do you think? Regards Henty

Not five minutes ago I resigned from another forum in a huge temper because of the constant racist remarks and name calling. I expected better from you guys.

I didn't see anything wrong with it in 2005 and I don't think I see anything wrong with it now...

SORRY

So, nice car from the plans. Very interesting. Are there many real ones about? Don't recall seeing one at local shows. Looks like a cool thing to own, esp if you live near a dam. Any pics of a real one?
