Fitting Westfalia Roof to '72 Kombi - help needed...

Post by Derek »

I am in the process of converting a '72 crossover to a camper, and will be fitting a front-hinged Westfalia roof next week. I need to know exactly where to cut the hole in the roof so that everything is correct in terms of it lining up with the roof. I was hoping that somebody with a early bay Westfalia could give me the measurement from the rear of the roof to the point where the roof is cut, as well as the dimensions of the hole...If you can assist, or have access to a diagram showing these measurements it would be appreciated...

Thanks :) I have just bought an actual '72 Westfalia which will come in handy as a template for the conversion :) We will add strengthening around the hole we cut in the roof...

So the roof is fitted and the hole cut - I'll take some pics over the next few days showing my solution for the strengthening around the hole, etc. The entire roof structure of a factory Westfalia is different to the stock kombi's, so things don't quite fit where you'd think they would, but I think it'll all work out fine...Will be fitting the roof liner tomorrow. Decided to go with white hardboard initially - may change it later on once I have these as templates...

Looks nice! Well done. I would like to see how it looks from the inside.
