Project Car For Sale - Zeus Kit Car from 1970s

Post by skane »

Hi, All
I have a Zeus Kit Car from the 1970s - I bought it from the guy that originally put it together. All paperwork and log book OK - getting it cleared into my name sometime within the next couple of weeks, as soon as the KZN Traffic people in PMB have cleared teh change of ownership from the old-style logbook.

I don't know a lot about it, except that the design has a South AFrican register number which can be found on the inside of teh trunk.

I was going to build up the car, but have realised I don't have the time, money or skills necessary, and also needed something for daily transport.

Here's what's on offer:

1970 Zeus Kit Car - looks like an old-style sports car, similar to Puma, but not quite.
1600 twin-port engine (told it was a '78).
Standard chassis & pan
Fibreglass body with roll-up windows, plexiglass on LHS, polycarbonate on RHS
Door hinges made with heavy duty (and I mean HEAVY duty!) Wrought-Iron.
Centre-mounted console
Smiths Wheels white Mags, one centre cap missing.
2 x standard Beetle spare wheels.
All electricals working 100%, battery is fine
Stainless steel bolts and windscreen wiper arms
No cracks in windscreen or rear window
The previous owner had the whole vehicle re-wired, and the job has been neatly done - proper conduiting in place, not yaerds of insulation tape
Car is easy to start and speedo/lights on 7 off/ indicators/Odometer work.
Have managed over 140KM/H (indicated) on the freeway
Vehicle weighs in at just over 800KGs.

Work Done:
I've had the Kingpins and Linkpins sorted.
I've had blocks put on the pedals to make them easier to reach
I've put in new seat covers
The oil pump has been replaced
Good second-hand shocks have been fitted
New exhaust mounting flange has been fitted
New mounting plate fitted to inside of RHS door to strengthen it, made of 2 x 2mm Stainless Steel plate.

The Faults:
The pan is rusty where the battery leaked through, but covered by a galvanised steel plate under the battery
Needs new seats, headliner and complete interior
Bodywork has been brush-painted and needs to be completely sanded down, filled and re-painted.
Headlight covers need to be sourced (possibly from Puma)
Engine is leaking oil - but this is probably just seals, nothing major, judging by the urge I get when I put my foot down
The carburettor needs work
The petrol tank is rusty and there is a petrol leak somewhere in the system - I suspect a burst pipe, since I lost R 100.00 worth of fuel in about 8KMs
No back for the back seat
The body needs to be sealed in a few places to prevent rain getting in in wet weather - a few drips currently get in from the door/windscreen area and when U go through a puddle some water sprays in from teh LHS front wheel - but I'm sure this is easily fixed.

I reckon if someone were to take this project on with the relevant skils and contacts (like AirColed VW SA, for instance!), they could have a very nice sporty runaround car on the road, for under R30 000.00, roadworthied.

If you're interested, I'm happy to entertain any offers, or am prepared to swap for a motorcycle in reasonable condition.
