Turbo it will be.. will be going for a type IV standard motor with a suck through turbo. Will open a seperate thread for a "Cheap turbo assembly". Can't go wrong with this setup

Well done for taking on this resto Johan. It's a HUGE project; you've got more courage than me!
It's really great to see that already two of the four giveaway buses are under restoration.
Let me know when you're ready to start buying body panels, I may be able to help.

Re: "BELLA" - My 64 Split is coming back to life
Just an Update
Started last week with my project.. The beetle motor I had in mind for my project has a conrod through the block as we speak,, scrapped the beetle motor. I decided to go for the golf motor in the bus with the radiator in the valance at the back. Will use the cranc pully to blow air on the radiator. (1400 Nissan principal)
I have decided to go this route for the main reason I don't know the beetle motor and raced with with golfs.
For this project I'm using a 1300 Golf motor (Formula V racing) and will turbo charge this baby. Dave said my adaptor and flywheel will be waiting at his shop for this conversion.
I have send the enjin block in to the engineers and recieved it back yesterday, (And yes I will post pics )
The head should be ready by next week.

Re: "BELLA" - My 64 Split is coming back to life
Sorry gents,, had to go to Johannesburg in an emergency,, Will get the pics posted (Scouts honour)
Just a question.. saw a few bays at the scrap yards there, (Near Babsfontein-- Petit I recon) are the back light corners interchangeble, bottom rib cage, can I salvage from there as well,, look pretty much the same to me. Thinking of hacking some of the parts from a bay in my rebuild efford,

Re: "BELLA" - My 64 Split bus with WC Conversion
Some of the photo's after the engine came back from the engineers
Here is the block (VW citi 1300), a 20" oversize bore had to be done
Some of the new spares, everything have been replaced on the block, even the welch plugs, small ends on the conrods and oil pump. Want to take pics on the modified oil pump and show what have been done
And the electrics to get the new motor started
The head was redone as well (New valves, gides, seats, seals .. the works),, will get it back end of the week.. Just had a problem with a stripped thread and a helicoil was needed. Will post pics when the head returned.
The next step will be to get the adaptor plate and turbo -- A T2 turbo with onboard waste gate without the water jackets and obviosly a possitive seal (Carbon seal) need to be installed. Why I chose the onboard wastegate is because I'm not going to boost higher than .6 Bar. An onboard wastegate is good up to .8 bar I recon, after that you need a external wastegate as you tend to get overboost with sudden boost periods with onboard wastegates
I forgot my SU carb in Johannesburg (had one spare from a previos project),, Very stupid of me as I was in a rush to get back to Cape Town.. Won't be able to start the enjin without the carb. Another Johannesburg trip need to be planned again
I started to clean the bus and discovered all the rust, will finish of the cleaning this weekend before the restoration can be started on my baby. (Pics for the guys that read better with them will follow)
You will have to excuse me if I go into detail, but just want to show people how simple a turbo setup can be
To watercool the bus,, that is a new adventure, but with basics it should be simple
Will keep you updated

Indeed,, Bella is of the ground, Will take a while, recon some swearing will be in order in the end of the day as well
Have to figure out how to get to the top of the enjine (When the enjin is installed), might have to modify a Bay hatch on the Split.
Will visit some scrap yards this weekend as well to see what is out there
