This weekend I tackled an issue on my Beetle, which has been bugging me for some time. Excuse the pun! Some months ago I replaced the original fuel pump with a new one, which I thought would be a good idea, as the old one has probably been on the car since 1971. I ran it for a while, always feeling that the car was not entirely happy with the new pump. On Saturday I plumbed in a pressure gauge and measured 5 psi, which I know to be too much for my Solex carb. I then cleaned up the original Pierburg pump, installed it, and measured 3.2 psi, which is closer to spec, and the car seems quite happy with it.
