Was a pleasure having you around Wayne. Good luck with your build.

I edited the video you made so that it is "right way up"

In reality there isnt really too much to report on this project, as there is little to nothing being done other than driving the bug from time to time.

Today I went to a Subaru Dyno day here in the Cape.
I have been having fun with the jetting and have currently settled on the jets which seem to work best for this engine. There is still room for improvement, but I am slowly resigning myself to the fact that I do need to install fuel injection in this car to make it better.
Anyway, the dyno day was fun and the run was about half the price of a normal run during the week - so at least I got a printout so I can keep track of my progress and see if I am getting somewhere.

I was a bit disappointed with my 131kW at 6300rpm. Which is 4kW down on my previous reading at 5700rpm. But I have since learned that the power is rated at the wheels, not at the flywheel like the previous dyno's I have been to. So, all in all, that equates to 195hp give or take a few - so I am creeping up on the 200hp mark.

You will see I still have a pretty big flat spot, but this is nowhere near to as big as it used to me. The carbs go very rich from 3000 to 3800rpm (9.5:1 AFR). Then up to 5000 they are perfect but from 5000 they begin to lean out a bit until I am at 14:1 at 6000rpm.
So yea, room for improvement, but I cant get the carbs any better at the moment. I need to do more research on emulsion tubes to hopefully get somewhere.

maybe.... maybe not - we'll see how long it lasts
The engine does push out more hp than the clutch can handle...

Well, I was the handsome camera man you did not see in the video  Let me say this, ANGRR is a beast but oh so sweet!
S, I went to Mr Z's place to sort out an issue, on my soon to be ex Beetle's carb. I knew I was running low on the gogo juice but thought
I'l make it to Tony's and back to the filling station.....I'm sure I don't have to explain what happened next. Jip, ran out of fuel about a K's from Tony's place. I really thought I'd be there until the cows came home and luckily for me they did, just a Tony arrive with a can of the gogo stuff.

We got back to his place without any further incidents. Told him the carb had a flat spot, right at the bottom and needed him to sort it out. He said the first thing would be to check the timing. I thought a "let me tune it by ear" was going to be in order but not Mr Z! Pulled out an encyclopedia, the Google, the Bible, a mini mainframe computer and a piece of paper. (Not really sure why, I thought the ear was good enough  )

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the bug was sorted and then we got to play. Let me tell you, as much as ANGRRR gave me a semi, I would give my left, no, make it both, nuts for that Panelvan

Thanks for your help Tony, you're an officer and a gentleman :hangloose:

Nice demo of what an aircooled VW is capable of, if willing to spend the time and money. Awesome car!

Many years ago I wrote a bit of software for a company that develops chips for modern cars, and build their own dyno's too. They have a theory that you accelerate on the rollers as hard as you can, until you hit the limit. Then you close the throttle and let the wheels decelerate in gear while you keep on recording. You can then calculate the drag of the drive-train (the longer the wheels keep on spinning, the less drag). By adding the drag to the torque you get to the "real" output of the engine. Does that make sense?

the guys who did my dyno ages ago did the run and then at full rpm put it into neutral and let it slow down from full speed to nearly idle. This measures the power consumed by the tyres and the gearbox.
From memory, this was around 20hp on my car.
So, 175hp on the rollers is around 195hp on the flywheel
