Ok so thats the end of the donor, all chopped.

Tool my father made based on the VW factory tool, used to break open the roof gutter.

I cut out the main piece I need for the oval , for anyone interested this is what the roof looks like when cut.

Got the roof off. This is actually an easy job once the channel is opened

Hoping to get R500 for both rear sections, still pretty good condition.

With the water issues going and no need to clean parts anymore the 1000l molasses tank has reached its end. Some parts were left in the tank for more than a year. Shouldve taken it out sooner to avoid the corrosion.

Anybody know what the part is in the left corner ? Some sort of support piece ?

Im also looking for a hood prop for the beetle, if anyone has one please let me know.

not one of the wiper arms attached to the wiper motor?
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.

Just a link to the gearbox to keep it all connected.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=37037

Will be starting with the front beam soon.
Already have some surface rust on some shiny new parts, any ideas as to how to get it off and keep it rust free ? Will post some pics up tonight of the parts.

Sorry Donovan, only see your post now. The one in your picture would be for the passenger door. It got the bracket for the armrest.

So you need the driver door, but they are universal, only difference is the armrest bracket on it. (No armrest on drivers side)

Very simple.

Work faster and finish it before it starts rusting again.

With the gearbox almost done I started with the front beam. The rear drums are at FFR for the machining to make them fit the short axles.

Image

So now I have these covers with rubber o rings, it seems that they go here but im not too sure. Do these then replace one shim ?

Image

Image

Is the offset measurement and re-shim required each time the car is lowered or raised with adjusters ?

The seal carriers or "covers" are in the correct place. They do not replace any shims. You have a 1960 and later kit, which has the seal carriers and O-rings, and 8 shims per link pin. 1959 and earlier did not have seal carriers or O-rings, and has 10 shims. Should not be a problem using the later kit on your Oval. Once set, you should not need to change the shim stacks, when you adjust ride height.

What is the difference between the two ? Im also using an oval workshop manual which meantiones the 10 shims. Will use the 8 shim chart instead.

These are the spindles.

Later link pin kits had the O-rings and O-ring carriers, possibly to stop grease from following the path of least resistance through the split in the trailing arm. They reduced the shim count from 10 to 8, I guess to compensate for the thickness added by the seal carrier.

If you have the later kit, use the 8-shim chart, that will be fine.

Discs are going on. Please let me know if there is something wrong with the assembly. Im figuring it out as I go but seems straight forward.
It does however seem that the threads on both spindles are badly damaged for the hub nuts. I also have two different sized thrust washers which I need to sort out.

The adapter just touches, the disc clears the caliper by about 1mm.
