I see 2 serious issues here.

There is supposed to be a vent opening behind that checker plate, your vents have been blocked off. This is to allow air from those 3 vents you see either side of the bus to travel inside the bus, then enter through the fire wall to the engine bay.

You also do not have your foam engine seal in place. Your engine will be trying to cool itself with hot air.

This pic was prior to the Foam going in and was the only one I had in my archive where I could show the back checker plate that is in there.

Do you perhaps have a pic of what it should look like I want to remove that checker plate and see what is in there this weekend before I go on any sort of trip again. Maybe everything is there but hard to compare if you do not know what it should look like

Searched the net for a picture of what openings should look like. In most cases this was obscured by the upright type 1 engine.

Ok Guys and Gals so hier is die storie.

For the last couple of years we have been taking our time traveling to our camping destinations taking at least 3 Days to get to our destination and trying to travel and sleep over at different destinations

So this year we taking Blue as our main transport and making it even more of an adventure

Trip down planned
Leaving Pretoria on the 15 th
N1 to Bloemfontein sleeping over there
16 th leave early to our next destination Noupoort
Colesberg we will turn onto the N9
A short trip I know but have never spent time in Noupoort before
17 th leave early From there head down towards Barandas and take the R341 towards Oudtshoorn
Sleep over in Oudtshoorn where we have driven through plenty of times but never actually slept over
18 th we head down to Mosselbay on the R 328 and then taking the N2 towards Stilbaai

Will obviously do a trip report but for this week I still have to make a plan to get a canopy fitted of some sort and went yesterday to try these outjies get test fitted





Also had to decide on Canvas Colour.






Will have a proper service done even though I have done less than 500 km so far on the new engine and make sure I have all spares but as I have seen there will always be something that I will need extra.

The trip up we will plan while on holiday but we are planning on being back for New Years

SMITSWINKEL IS AN ECCLECTIC STOP THAT IS WORTH THE STOP/STAYOVER AND THE RESTAURANT IS JOLLY GOOD AS WELL.
NOT SURE IF IT HAS HAPPENED BUT THE OWNER WAS PLANNING ON BUILDING A CARTING TRACK AND CINEMA THERE AS WELL.

Lekker Mark will definitely try and check it out.

Any other Lekker suggestions the Forum might have on some places to see along the route ?

Ok Guys so Post December trip some issues and advice needed
CV’s

Trolled the forum for info about the spacers on the cv’s and could not find it yet

New CV’s was installed in Blue and lost one before the trip

Gerhard Mentined that there is a spacer that has to be made since new CV’s are not the correct size

Loctite - which one do I choose I understand there is loctite for different applications
Think i will be able to unscrew one at a time put loctite and bolt back in ?

CV Spacer - where does the spacer go how big must it be?

Know it might be silly questions but a total newbie on most of these things.

Apparently the brand new ones has something wrong with the size

The ones in the picture I have in but there is two or three missing.

Going to invest in some lock tite and some proper spring washers. And lock those baby’s down properly.

There are two VW CV joint's, the one for the Kombi is the 100mm OD and the early Golf ones are 93 mm od.

You can get the 100 mm OD cv as the Golf 2 uses them so they are available.

You can not put a thick washer between the CV and wheel mount, as you will be to high for the centralizing shoulder.

Get a new set of cap heads HT and "Loctite Tread loc " it a small red bottle.

Just remember to toque to the right setting as if too low it will loosen up, and if too much it may strip the threads.

Loctite one at a time and you should be fine.

I wouldn't advise on the above as the CV's are simply incorrect. You do not need to use locktite.

The bolts must also be as per Eugene's pic. There is a special lock washer on those bolts with that load bearing plate.

I would advise to either find a good used original set or import the genuine GKN Lobro CV's that are made in Germany. Lobro made the OEM VW parts.

You are just going to have endless crap with those Chinese varieties. The boots will soon fail as well.

Will measure the ones that are on and see what the OD is

Anybody with good originals or Alternatively Sean do you have the correct Part number.

The GKN Lobro part number is 302255. This is for the complete kit, CV joint, boot, bolts etc.
