If 1800/ 5-rib, code might be CM or CN.

1800- Final drive 4.857:1, 4th 0.89:1
2L- 4.57:1, 4th 0.89:1 (later "T3" shape aircooled had 0.85 4th)

1600- Final drive was 10% shorter than 1800 at 5.375:1. But 4th 8% taller at 0.82:1.
Comparing overall 1800 gearing to 1600, lower 3 gears are 10% taller and 4th 2% taller.
Basically 1800 box has smaller gap between 3rd and 4th, making 3rd usefull up to higher speeds when downshifting on steep uphills.

Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).
"Things should be as simple as possible, BUT NO SIMPLER THAN THAT."
"If something can go wrong, it will go wrong" (Murphy's law).

Anyway thanks guys, we got the Panel Van down to George and back...

In the next post i will list all that was done to the 1971 P/V but now good news.

Johan (Eagle) joined me on the Saturday early morning run to George, as I was still working on the bus at 18H00 the Friday night.

She run fantastic, but on the way back home, approx, 10Km from home the brakes started binding due to the MC not bleeding back to the Brake fluid tank

so this week we will get a new one and ready the Bus for KKK.

Thanks for looking.

You right Tony, after the KKK, I will have all the time I need to get to the "Work in Progress" project of the Panel Van

Getting her on the road is 1st priority, then I will not loose interest in a dust collector in the back of the workshop....

Have Great plans for her, one would be to name it, as it is replacing a legend, and has big shoes to fill, the Fugly has dug deep into my hart.

Johan 1st had an Alfa motor in the Eagle, but found it too unreliable, so he fitted a Golf motor, and is much happier now. She looks and drives excellent.

Should get him to do a Project thread here on the forum on it. "Hoor jy Johan....."

With the vans apparent past, maybe I should name it "The Saint" or just ....

Image

what you guys think....

So to keep up the info of this thread, the repairs to the bus where over and above those mentioned, as follows.

Had to do the door locks, repair and same key tumblers rework.
Had to fit the rock and roll bed
Fit cover to engine cover, and fit number plate lights,
With the engine being locked up due to the 2lt fly wheel and the 1600 bell housing, I did not have time to remove the engine, and cut out the clearance needed .
SO, I did it the lazy way by loosening the bolts till the engine was free, started her up, and as she was running, thightend the bolts little at a time till she was in. She made a hell of a noise, and was not happy, but went in anyway. Now she is snug and happy.
Had to work up till 10 pm the night before leaving for George, and got onto the road by 5 am the next morning, but as above we made it to George without any breakdowns.

The way back, not so lucky.....

The brakes backed up, and the master cylinder would not discharge back into the brake fluid holder.

This happened in the steep hill into Jeffery's Bay. with the brakes dragging, we made it home.

The run to George was a shake loose, to see if she has any issues.

On return I replaced the MC, bled the brakes again, and sealed the wind screen as we where well wetted in George.

So off we went to Parys.....

She ran well bit heavy on fuel, but she did not miss a beat.

As we entered Kroonstad, the Chines starter decided it had had it 4 years of service and was well overdue for a break down.

So push starting her was on the menu as from that time.

tried to do some emergency repair at the KKK, but with little success.

The arrival at the KKK, signified that her mechanics where in line with where i wanted her to be, now we just have to do the body.

I was even more chuffed, and beaming with pride when the FIG'S bestrode a Award on her.

Image

She made it under her own steam, and was not a trailer queen like a lot of better looking buses.

NOW we have a target to work to, the other end of the scale........

On the way back, we where invited by Garhard of the Volksie Museum to overnight at his place and this gave us a long awaited option to view his toys.......

Thanks guys, it was a wonderful evening with great Friends, but we had to leave the next morning, as it rained in the Free State.

Again she ran like a champ, not missing a beat.

The hart of old Fugly beating in her rear-end, made the trip a memorable road trip, not to be forgotten.

Once again, thanks to the Fig's as well as the Gerard family (dogs and all) for a excellent few days.

Thanks Terry,

Yes just knowing she did it under her own power from PE to Parys and back to PE makes me so proud, not a trailer or tow rope any where along the trip.

Well done "The Saint"

Well done Herman.
Making the engine fit while it is running isnt exactly something that I would consider, but well done to you...

As for the name, since its a van, what about "Vanity" ?

nice one...but the saint is more appropriate (tongue in cheek) if you know the history of the bus

Will send it to you by PM some time.

Same here Paul, Loved your fire engine, made me feel much safer in the rain........

So the old Chines starter was replaced by a new "no Name Brand" starter, and she is back to life.

Also received the engine lid and front bumper from vwoldies

so we will be getting into her soon for the make over.

1st she has to take the Fugly to her transport friends so we can further donate to the saving of other buses.

Then she has to wait till the 1952 split beetle is up and running, before she gets more attention.

So till then
