OK , so the Bay will not be taking the Fugly to her resting place, as the new starter started the bus for two days and then also stopped turning the engine, same as I had at KKK weekend.

Got her into the workshop, and stripped out the engine.....

Then I saw what I did not want to see...

The ring gear has been chewed up, and the starter bush has disintegrated.

So then we get to the reason WHY.

:rantswitch:

This "100% working Gearbox, I know its perfect" has a starter bush hole the size of my arm.... Its been peened over a number of times to try make it smaller, and this at double the going rate, I ask you, do you need Friends like this.

OH while I am at it, it jumps out of 4th as well......

:rantswitch:

Anyway had to make a bush to bring the hole size back to STD, and fitted a new Bronze starter bush.

Also saw that 2 of the 4 new CV boots are broken, .. (can one not buy anything decent any more)

Now I have taken off the flywheel, and having to put a new ring gear on, or if thats not obtainable in SA, I will need a new flywheel.

while the box is out, I need to address the 4th gear slipping out problem, and fit a new Thrust bearing.

Who Has decent CV boots, maybe these new neoprene ones, not sure how long they work.

OK till its fixed....

Yes I also use to do that with the old british cars as the ring gear was 15 or 20mm wide.

But this 2000lt flywheel only has a 10 mm ring, and its shot right through.

But thanks for the reminder.

Will see when the shops open.

Thanks

Just an update, the JHB gods have been kind to me and donated a flywheel for the Bay,

thanks Pierre.

Starter Bush housing has been fixed with with insert, and bush fitted. Motor has been installed, and tested.

Had a problem with 4th gear, so i striped the back gearbox mounting off and just managed to get the hockey stick cover to one side removed the selector post and and repaired the selector.

With much speaking in foreign tongues, it went back and worked fine.

So as i was busy and had already taken all the skin off my hands, i removed all the wear bushes which had to be turned as the cupboard was bear.

Re-assembled the gear lever rods and struck a blank.

Nothing fitted and every thing was out by about 135 deg.

After a few cups of tea, and some clear thinking, I realized that the 2nd rod from the front must have two dimples, one for RHD and one for LHD.

turned the 2nd rod 135 Deg around and there low and behold was the 2nd dimple.

After that, all went smoothly, and the bus was shortly on its test drive.

All ended well, and I could return home to receive my number of Hail Mary's for my foul mouth.

good thing I broke the "Swear Jar" many years ago.

Well till next time, when I hopefully will be doing some restoration work and not just repairs.

So my mood is still running high due to being taken for a fool with this gearbox.

This Over priced "perfect gearbox" has cost me another shed load of cash to repair,

This time the whole gearbox was done as I can not afford to keep fixing single things every week.

So I am sure my gearbox at close to R20 K is the most expensive box on the forum..........

Sorry guys but I must vent, or I will say or do someone a damage.....

Here's hoping its now the end of this issue, and the whole BAY bus does not leave a bad taste in the mouth.

yes I know its not the bus's fault, so... i should get over it..... In time... but forget....NEVER...

When it returns from the gearbox gurru, it will be new, we will put it in and drive the bus till we fall in love again..

Till then...

Yip these gearboxes can bite you sometimes unfortunately you bought a Lemmon from someone but sorted now

You got the 2 most expensive box on the Forum

I ask one of my suppliers for a Quote for very short ratio gears 3de and 4th for Flagbuggy

Next I speak to him and he recon I'm going to be Upset

I ask why
He recon the Yanks have just sent 3 sets of short ratio gears and Deducted his Account

And if I was a Box I would have just told him sorry that is your shit
But I needed at least 1 set
So I ended up paying for 2 sets and believe me one set of 3&4th was more that your total cost of your box
So I know the feeling you got in the Stomach

When greed for money comes before your mothers upbringing.

So, after supper, got stuck in and fitted the gearbox and motor,

Went very quick as the three of us worked together for a change.......

Who was all there I hear you all ask....

Well it was Me myself and I.......

Sh#t sense of humor is back, no this old Toppy has to work alone.

Kids will help if asked, but only on the weekends, and then I still have to feed them...

So I will start her up tomorrow evening, if all thing pan out.

Till then

Started her up again today tested all the gears and all seems fine,

Filled up oil in gear box and neatened up all the wires again.

Will test gearbox oil level again in the morning before going for a test drive.

Ok so the bus is running excellent, and used to transport all thats asked of her.

So now that the mechanical s are all done, and the rock & Roll bed is fitted, will be doing the load box area.

Have the front bumper as well as the correct engine lid.

The fuel tank pipes have all been replaced and no fumes any more.

OK, so long time no post..

The Bay has been stripped, Cut out the rusty valance, welded in a new one and sent her off to my Panel beater and paint shop.

Yes , I have decided to bring her back in a state that is befitting her willingness to please.

She has been working hard lately, and has earned the new paint job, as well as having her upholstered to a high stranded.

So she will slide into her place in the family looking like the Beetle, Fastback and Fleetline.

So till the great reveal,

Had a call from my Spray painter today,

The Bay is out of the spray booth and being polished as we type.

Will be taking her straight to my upholsterer, for an brand new interior, and yes Sean, all new, as she has no original parts in her at all.

She was a "pushers" bus, totally blacked out, and "Tricked Out" so will be doing her a favor.
