Westfalia Camper 1970

Post by jolas »

Sean and I bought this Westy from Jean in Paarl today (thanks to one of Fig's Gumtree reposts :hangloose: )

We bought it sight unseen, so we were'nt sure what to expect. The MOEGOES who transported it from JHB (not sure what company it was), failed to
strap or secure the front hinged portion of the fibre glass roof, the result is that it was lost somewhere along the journey (I'm hearing a lot of similar stories with car transporters recently, so, keep this in mind if you are having a bus transported soon. (and if you are driving behind one of these transporters, it might be an idea to keep a good following distance  )

This westy is quite thrashed - no motor, no gearbox, no interior, no roof. Its quite disgusting inside and the previous owner or his mechanic had some very wierd ideas.

And now it's up on the lift and will be ready and driving on Monday according to Sean

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

Eish, you guys have little faith in me.... someone has to save the T3 kombis before it's too late:twisted: But it's just for the collection, travelling to shows will always be the air cooleds. They still the best.

This westy was really attacked by a bastard mechanic, I spent the whole day just removing this idiots work. I think I need an extension till next weekend to get this one driving.

Thanks didi - we purchased the pop-up roof from her for R1000 and it came with new canvass sides, etc :hangloose:

Awesome, that is great news. One step closer. I have a replica rear facing Westy seat as well if you are interested.

Thanks didi. We are in fact missing that unit, but I have the actual seat/cushion section and the padded backrest section. The base might be easy to make up, will let you know when we get closer to the interior part of the project :)

Ok, so here are a few pics of the bus completed, for now that is....

It must get a full restoration, but I have other projects to finish first. I have just given the mechanical components a thorough overall to have the bus in a good driving state for now.

I will share more of the mechanical rebuild pics later, but quite honestly, this bus was in the worst mechanically molested/abused state I have ever seen. The entire suspension, brake system, drive train and fuel system needed a rebuild (that's normal) but the molestation from previous work was unforgivable, I must also not forget the wiring loom I had to pretty much do over from being cut-up so badly.

Imager

Donor Westy roof also installed and working, but note the safety strap  . This westy roof is going to need some fibreglass work before I trust it.

Westy "interior" installed just for completness for now. I still need to source a sink/ice box unit.

I have installed a fresh 1600 single port kombi motor.
