Thanks for all the comments. I'm very excited as this phase is nearly finished. They are busy polishing the car. It will probably be finished by the end of next week. Then assembly starts. I can't wait to see how it will look. Image

Coming along nicely.

The rim colours are of interest to me. Did you manage to see the original colour before you stripped the old paint?
There are many diffirent opinions regarding that.

Hi Jaco

Yes, there are different opinions on the colour of the rims. Unfortunately the car didn't come with 16 inch rims. I were very lucky to get hold of a Nov 1951 set of rims by by Kronprinz. So I read up a lot on The Samba, and decided after a lot of contemplation to go with this colour scheme for the rims. If it doesn't look right when the car is finished, I can have them repainted with the cream colour. What is your opinion? Do your green car still have the original wheels, and if it has, please give me your input.

I have not really come to a conclusion but think they came out in different colour schemes.

Thanks Jaco, but I'm more confused now!!! Just a comment. It seems that there is different interpretation and how the cars came from the factory

What is your personal opinion Jaco? How will you paint the rims? I really appreciate your interest on this and your comments will help me a lot.

Rudi

I would leave them like they are now. That is easy to change later if you want. The colours you paintrd is definitely one of the options so not incorrect.

As you know our cars are just over 500 units apart so both in the same month and very close. Same colour too.

I regret that I did not take more photos at the time before I restored it. (Only got six photos.) I did check now and I don't have a photo of the rims. It was over twenty years ago and do not remember. But, I did paint them with the light beige so assume they were like that but can not tell for sure.

When looking at the photos now I see my petrol tank was green before I stipped it. The car had a blow over before I got but the inside of the tank section still looks like original colour.
Before I never gave much attention to the colour of the tank and just thought they were black. But lately I did see there are also diffirent views if it was black or body colour so noticed my green one now when looking at the photos.
Could you see what colour your tank was?

Thanks for the comments Jaco, you are the go to man when it comes to Split window Beetles. Your opinion is invaluable.

Unfortunately my car did not have the original tank as well. I've sourced one but I planned to paint it black. Suddenly I'm in doubt. What will your recommendation on that be?

Rudi.

I did read through the one post I seen again now. You right, June 52 would be black. (Or dark grey like some say)

Here is the link:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... nk&start=0

This is from the thread:
(Following does not apply to standards!, export only)
up to april 1951: Same colour as the car.
from april 1951 to mid 1955: Sedan: Matt black, Cabrio: same as the car.
from mid 1955: bluish grey on most cars.

Black it should be, but Matt Black, I am sure is not right, it would be a satin black or semi matt black as far as I know.

It would be the same paint they used on the engine tins.

Haha Herman, I knew I would get a response. The Split Window Beetle community is so small!!!

It will probably be satin black like the chassis. I really appreciate your response.
