Good to see yet another Split beetle being restored.

Great find, not many 1948 models in SA, think "Jan" from the VW Auto pavilion is a 1949 but that was the 1st SA assembled Beetle.

Can not wait to see this project take shape.

Good Luck

Looking forward the another split beetle build.

This is a STD model and LHD so would be nice to see the build, will be a bit different than the Deluxe model that we mostly see.

Jan is a LHD beetle so was not assembled here in SA. The first beetle was only assembled much later in in end of August 51.

Wonder why a 1948 but the VIN is from April 1950.

You totally correct, my mind was a bit mixed up.

Yes Jan was the oldies Beetle SAVW could find in 1971, and it was an imported LHD.

If you look it has a Number stamped under the vin tag, and the rivets are replaced, this makes me think it has been reintroduced by the Cops way back in time. My original trailer at that time had the same short number stamped.

But there is a lot of non original parts together, looks as if someone wanted to update the old split to a newer Beetle. this was common in the old days.

I got a bit worried about you... It happens, the older you get the more you forget the basics.

That number on the body is the body number. I have noticed a lot of our local assembled cars don't have it.

XXX Checked now, the body number is also from April 1950.

If you cannot see the original colour you can get a certificate from the German museum. They should have it. They don't have much
info of our local assembled cars and is a waste to get one for them. On my 51 import they had the correct colour on.

I am sure yours should have the cable brakes and lever shocks.

So good to see the Split Beetles coming out of the woodworks. Can't wait to see the progress and keep the pictures coming.
