Hi all
New to the forum . I bought a 71 beetle recently. I have a list of things I want to do...but not sure where to start . I haven't driven on the road yet,except the day I brought it home when I bought it

Ultimately want to change the color (will post pics soon).
Things I need to do
1. Change tyres
2. Are brakes a DYI job ?
3. She starts ...but idle is erratic and sometimes cuts out
4.do I need to get it checked over by an expert for mechanical issues ....any suggestions who I can use ....based in Jhb
I can help myself mechanically but to an extent ....can do oil service and change brake pads ...but haven't ventured further than that

buy yourself the Haynes Manual and start reading. Then you can begin to tackle the small jobs - start with a full service and work your way up from there.
Brakes can be done DIY, but without the correct tools to size the pads to the drum, you wont have a good result and you'll end up with a care which is less than safe.

The disassembly and assembly of the brakes can be done DIY. Just follow the manual.I take my brake drums and shoes to a brake shop and the guy skims the drums and re-line the shoes for R500. I'd suggest you do the same.

How would I know if i had a twinport engine or not ??
I have this carb in my 71 beetle and is this a Standard carb

Look where your inlet manifold goes into the heads, if it has a single entry, you have a single post, and if it splits into two pipes, then you have a twin port.

You could also do Google searches like "differences between Beetle single port and twin port". You'll get more info than you would want.

Need some advice please....i jacked up my beetle to put the back end on jack stands ...strangely as I was jacking up and when the vehicle tilted slightly left she started to leak oil from the gearbox ....definitely gearbox as it had a different colour and smell to engine oil.....what could have gone wrong ...as I had to put a drip pan under to control leak....it still leaked while I had it on the stands

axle boots are probably torn
