Well done MARK

Great work.

Always nice to see the successful end to a hard project.

Sure you will inspire many young ones to also start something.

Thanks for the posting

Herman

IT TOOK ME 2 MONTHS, OCT & NOV WORKING FLAT OUT.
NO, I DID NOT SELL THE BUS TO THE CLIENT. IT IS STANDING IN MY YARD WITH THE OTHER PROJECTS WHICH I HOPE TO WORK ON SOMETIME THIS YEAR. (WELL AT LEAST ONE OF THEM)
THANKS TERRY. MY HOODLINER SKILLS ARE IMPROVING WITH EACH ONE I DO. TWO MORE AND I THINK I'LL HAVE IT DOWN.

AND NOW THE REASON " I WON'T DO THAT AGAIN".

THE BUS WAS USED AS STATED AS A PROP BUT WHAT WASN'T STATED WAS THAT IT WOULD BE STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE BEACH/SEA FOR 6 WEEKS STRAIGHT WITHOUT A WASH OR CLEAN. WHAT WAS ALSO NOT MENTIONED WAS THAT STUFF WOULD BE STORED INDIDE THE BUS NOR THAT PEOPLE WOULD BE ALLOWED TO LEAN UP AGAINST THE VEHICLE TO TAKE PHOTO'S.

SO AFTER ALL ALL THE EFFORT AND TIME AND MONEY IT TOOK ME TO GET THIS TOGETHER THE BUS CAME BACK QUITE BADLY DAMAGED.
THERE ARE DENTS ON VIRTUALLY EVERY PANEL INCL. THE ROOF. HUGE SCRATCH AND DENT ON THE PASSENGER DOOR. CHIPS IN PLACES. THE DRIVER'S SIDE HANDLE/LOCK BROKEN AND THE BUS FULL OF BEACH SAND. THE PASSENGER SIDE THAT WAS FACING THE SEA HAS SURFACE RUST SHOWING IN PLACES (THOSE OF YOU LIVING AT THE COAST AND USE YOUR BUSSES TO GO TO THE BEACH ETC. WILL KNOW).
THE BUS WAS CLEVERLY RETURNED ON A SUNDAY NIGHT SO THESE FAULTS WERE NOT OBVIOUSLY EVIDENT UNTIL MONDAY MORNING WHEN I GOT UP TO START REMOVING THE VINYL.
I WAS SERIOUSLY ANNOYED.
ANYWAY.... THE VINYL WAS ANOTHER STORY.
IT TOOK ME 2 DAYS TO GET THE STUFF OFF. NOT THE ACTUAL PLASTIC SHEET STUFF BUT THE GLUE THAT REMAINED AFTER PEELING THE PLASTIC/SHEETING OFF.

MY THOUGHTS INITIALLY WERE THAT I I WOULDN'T MAKE ANY MONEY BUT THE MONEY THAT I RECEIVED FOR THE RENTAL WOULD GET ME GOING ON THIS PROJECT WHICH MAY OTHERWISE HAVE STOOD FOR ANOTHER 4 YEARS, SO I TOOK IT ON BASED ON THAT. HOWEVER THE CONDITION THAT THE BUS WAS RETURNED IN BASICALLY NEGATED EVEN THAT DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF WORK TO CLEAN IT UP AND REPAIR IT AGAIN.

THEREFORE

I WON'T DO THAT AGAIN.

buy yourself a heat gun and use it to warm up the vinyl prior to pulling it off. The "glue" will come off with the plastic and it'll be much easier then not using heat

Maybe in future you can rent your bus out on the condition that it be returned in the same condition. The client would then have to ensure that all stickers, etc are removed prior to you receiving the bus. If they mess up the paint, they have to bear the repair cost.

THANKS TO YOU BOTH FOR THOSE WORDS OF WISDOM.
I WAS TOLD THAT THE VINYL WOULD COME OFF EASILY AND I DID USE A HEAT GUN. UNFORTUNATELY EACH TIME YOU STOP TO PULL A SECTION, IT LEAVES A STRIP OF GLUE BEHIND. CONSIDERING THAT ALMOST THE WHOLE BUS WAS COVERED IT TURNED OUT TO BE A LOT OF GLUE. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY THE VINYL GUY TO USE METHS. WHAT A LAUGH......! THAT GLUE JUST DRANK THE METHS LIKE A STARTER. I EVENTUALLY USED TURPS BUT HAVE BEEN TOLD I COULD HAVE USED PETROL OR ACETONE. ANYWAY, IT WAS A JOB AND A HALF AND I WENT THROUGH A GOOD NUMBER OF RAGS AS WELL.
FORTUNATELY NO PAINT WAS LIFTED DURING THE REMOVAL PROCESS.
THE OTHER THING THAT TURNED MY STOMACH WAS THE FACT THAT WATER COLLECTED BEHIND THE VINYL IN ALL THE SEAMS. NOT GOOD.

LESSON FOR THE DAY.
NO-ONE IS GOING TO CARE FOR YOUR STUFF THE WAY YOU EXPECT THEM TO NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY.

SO I SUPPOSE THAT THIS WILL BE THE LAST PICTURE POST ON THIS SUBJECT FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE AS IT'LL TAKE ME A WHILE TO GET SOME MOOLA TOGETHER TO PROGRESS ANY FURTHER.
ENGINE STILL TO DO, BRAKES AND WIRING. A BIT OF WORK ON THE INTERIOR ALSO ON THE CARDS, INCLUDING SOME SOUND.

HOPE YOU GUYS HAVE ENJOYED.

Ignorance - as far as basic vehicle maintenance is concerned, and a lack of respect for someone else's property - yip not a nice client at all .....

But, ja, also lessons learnt I suppose - next time, a carefully worded contract. AND the vehicle never goes anywhere else again without you or Cindy or someone you know. You cannot trust anyone with these jobs.
Members of the public, careless crew members, kids, the weather, etc - too many risk factors .....

Cool pics and thread :hangloose:

Ive been following, and sorry to see how this turned out brother :( You were so stoked after barely making the deadline and delivery , at least we got to "chew the fat" for a couple of hours :) Seems these things never go as planned , I never entertain the idea of renting out any of my cars (not that they are special by any means) but I did get get "caught" the one and only time someone managed to convince me to "just drive the bride to church" it turned out to be a 3 hour ordeal of waiting, picking up brides maids and driving around "looking for the perfect spot to take pics" so like you I WILL ALSO NEVER DO THAT AGAIN ! :):)
My biggest fear is that my wife sells my cars for what i told her they cost !!

And let's not even talk about matric balls - the waiting, deviation from agreed route, going to visit a class mate to look at her dress, etc. I will also not do that again!

I had to do a couple of these for my brother when he is not available. Have to say, not bad money he makes with it.... BUT, it does come at a cost... Like you said, the deviations and changes in plans and the WAITING is just not fun! He has an Eleanor Mustang...
What do people charge for driving farewells?

I was once asked to use my Anglia for a school yearbook photo prop. At the time I didn't think it was a goo idea, but after hearing stories like this, I know it is not a good idea!!

I didn't ask people a lot, just some petrol money. It gave me an opportunity to drive the old cars and force me to keep them in good shape. But alas, it caused me too much frustration.

People just dont have respect for other peoples cars when its on 'display'.

Although a panelvan is not high in demand for these types of events I have done a few. Luckily no issues and diversions and time wasting yet.
The biggest issues are at car shows, kids climb up the ladder, people just open doors and get in and do what they want.
My lock on the cargo door has been broken by someone forcefully trying to open the locked door.

If you not into classics,

and do not know the cost and time involved,

its just another OLD CAR...

Have had guys come up to me and make ridiculously low offers to buy my classic cars.

And when you give them a realistic price, they want to know who would pay that for an old skedonk...

Thats life....
