Found this between my late grandfathers tools this weekend. Would this have come with a car or bought like any other socket sets as he had quite a few aircooled vws through the years?

Just a regular Hazet socket set, not particular to any car or make. It's a pre-1965 set, fyi.

Very cool looking set that. Amazing that it has survived with nothing lost or broken from so long ago

Guys

I went to one of my local pawn shops and they have a Hazet assistant for way less than R 2000 it is repainted Red though and the lettering done in squickly white. I am thinking of picking it up but was wondering about that paint not sure if I will be able to match the colour though.

Think it might be worthwhile picking it up ?

Just confirm that it's a genuine Hazet Assistent. There are a number of cheap knock-offs out there. One, sold under the "Caddy" brand, was originally red.

Definitely has the Hazet logo and assistent punched into the metal.

When I looked I could not get the shelves to stay up think there must be something missing. They pull up without a problem but does not stay up.

Maybe there is a trick to it ?

I can't see your pics at work, so not sure which version you have.

If one of the pillar tops is blue, you need to unscrew the tops to unlock the shelves for collapsing. Conversely, you need to screw the tops down to lock the shelves in place once they are raised. Later versions have an automatic lock, which clicks into place once the top shelf is fully raised. To unlock, you just pull the locking tabs outwards.

Let me go and pick it up I think will post some pics of the ugly en decide from there. Think it is the original Hazet one.

Had a look on the net and the caddy one actually has caddy on them like a sticker that is stuck to it.

Will haggle a bit and see maybe maybe just pick it up.

Thanks Fig for the info will let you know and post some pics. Definitely will be a restoration project that I will attempt if I pick it up
