1981 Mk1 Golf GTS original for sale

Post by fig »

My neighbour is offering this 1981 Mk1 Golf GTS for sale for R30,000. I'm no Golf expert, but this car looks super original. To my eye only the steering wheel (and maybe the instrument cluster) have been replaced with Citigolf items. It has original upholstery under the removeable seat covers.

AFAIK the GTS was a SA-only model and you don't see many of them around these days, especially not in this original condition.

He wants R30,000 for it. Papers in order and licence up to date.

Wow .I could then sell my Metallic Blue 1982 GTS with the original front spoiler on and no dents and buckles on body for R50 000. :D

Looks more like a GLS to me, wrong interior (GTS had tartan seats and door cards) and black carpet and wrong front bumper

Thanks supervly. I know the seller is negotiable on the price. I know very little about Golfs, but did point out to the seller a few things that appear to be less than original.

The seats have removeable covers; apparently original upholstery underneath.

Does your have a LCD digital clock Louis? Supervly, why do you say the bumpers are incorrect? They are steel with plastic ends and look similar to the ones in the ad above.

In 1981 they had a "crossover" model for a short while. Before this model, they had thinner chrome bumpers with small corner pieces (Old school) , and after this "crossover" model they had the full plastic bumper completely covering the metal bumper.
Some GTS's came out with this brown interior, some had the more sportier blue/black, grey/black or red/black interiors.
Early models had the 3-spoke "GTi" steering wheels, from this model they had this more plain Jane steering wheel.
Also bigger taillights, different dash and a 4 + E, 5 speed 'box instead of 4 speed.
