Post by beetlepower »

Hi

I know it is not VW but it is air-cooled

Thought I would share a project that I have been working on the last couple of months. I am busy restoring this 1974 Yamaha DT175A

Although the bike is 43 years old I was able to find a lot of the parts from Yamaha dealers. However some of the bigger items and items that were not shared across multiple models are hard to find.
I was missing the seat, I managed to find the base on eBay and imported that. My plan was then to have foam and a leather/pleather cover made.
However by a ridiculous stroke of luck, Shimwells yamaha found this NOS seat cover in a box in their store somewhere, probably been in stock since the 70s

Shimwells Yamaha got its name from the two Shimwell brothers who, more than 100 years ago, ran numerous hobby shops across South Africa. In the early years they imported BSA and Triumph motorcycles but started dealing in Yamaha in the early 70's. Braham and André took over the business in October 1991. Since then Shimwells Yamaha has grown to become one of the biggest Yamaha dealers in Gauteng, South Africa.

Looking very nice I must say nice job.I had a blue one 1972 the one before the auto lube and it needed lots of work and I still got R7k for it 5yrs ago.
I have 2 Honda Cub 50s and 2 Yamaha SR 500"s but no time yet for the Honda"s the SR"s are running and are in good nic
But health is not on my side so progress is slow never mind the Beetles and the earlybay that are work in progress.
Good luck keep the pictures coming in. Have you been to Startline in Edenvale they got all sorts of stuff but all Chinese but the quality is not bad. Good luck.

Good one Reuben!

I think the values on vintage bikes will outpace classic cars because bikes are much easier to store, so more people will be able to keep them.
