1970 Deluxe Kombi

Post by sean »

So Paul and myself went on another lekker road trip to the Northern Cape last weekend to fetch my 1970 Deluxe Baywindow.

We got the trailer on Sunday evening and hit the road to be there the next morning. I decided to take the van as well to load up some bus spares from our secret location too

Here are a few pictures.

We spent the next night in the van at a petrol station on the way back, 2 nights without sleep wasn't going well on the road......
But look what had decided to do the same at Three Sisters. The next morning before 5am it had already left before us.

It was also rather cold that night in the van, but seems we had some thick snowfall the night before.

The bus has very good potential, its only the bad dents in the nose that involves some major work, but otherwise the body is very good.
Mechanically it needs work, as usual, this poor thing was still running original VW shocks, ball joints etc, so they are in a shocking state.

But, my main love for this bus is he colour. I have wanted one like this for quite some time. You don't see this colour very often, also with this unique brown interior.

Cool man, congrats!
I was waiting to see what the Northen Cape was gonna deliver.

Wonder if the guy that done that to the Autovilla was thinking it would be more streamline :)

Well, I decided to give it a quick clean and polish to see what the paint still looks like in the interim and it didn't come out too bad.
But when I was done with this, I thought I might as well getting in running again to.

You will see in the previous pics that it has a different rim on the back wheels, the drum had been changed to a late bay and foreign wheels used. I removed these, which involves swapping the shafts for the longer earlier bay and different drum, but this was the most hideous job. The right side shaft released off the hub quite easily and I could just do the swap, the earlier brake shoes and cylinder was still remaining inside (even though the later drum has a bigger circumference and different size slave cylinder), but the left shaft had in some way been butchered and I could get it off. I resulted to using heat, beating with big hammers, then the angle grinder and eventually the acetylene cutting torches to get that lot apart, man, this was half a days work.

But after that, a new set of tyres and a motor installed, I took it for a drive.

I really like this specific bus, its like a good wine, that someone forgot about and found after many years.

I wouldn't change a thing, this bus tells a good story. you just have to read between the dents.
maybe if I sell my kidney I could buy a Samba

Thanks. It will stay like this for the interim, but it will ideally need a new nose skin. The burnt section on the left is quite bad. The remainder of the bus would be a very easy restoration, but not at the moment.
