75 BUG

Post by Herr bmw »

Hi Guys

Just thought I share a couple pictures of my sons first car,he is only sixteen at the moment but since I had some funds available decided to buy a car that we could both work on together,he wanted a classic mini, but all the ones we looked at were rubbish and not worth fixing.

Some where I convinced him to look for a Beetle, and we started looking, found a few but they were just like the Mini, rubbish,at this stage I gave up and looked at Caddy bakkies, but,he didn't want one,he wanted a Beetle.
Eventually he found one and we wen out to Krugersdorp to have a look, and body wise was in excellent condition, motor was just rebuilt and had only 30km on it,didnt idle or run right, but it was the carb that wasn't set up right, interior was all original, and in good condition.so I bought it on the spot and picked up a week later on a trailer. The amazing thing about it was back in 1991/2 I bought a beetle(my first car) and was exact same colour before I sprayed it,he wants it too stay the same colour.so far I have changed latch on engine bay to one that can lock, front lights are now citi golf units and my son wanted eye lids on it,the Empi rims I bought before I even picked the car up,didnt like the Rostyle rims that were on it.i have found some accident damage on the front but will get it properly done next year.one thing that im happy about is there is no rust at all.

The car chassis and engine numbers match up(no recon motor at all) and its on its third registration plate(old black and white TK,then yellow and black T ,then the new GP plate),it never left Krugersdorp at all in its life.i am the fifth owner of the car.

it is going to have some work done on it as time goes by,and until my son turns 18 I will be using it on some of the runs, like last Sundays breakfast run,was actually worried that it wouldn't make it,so got the wife to follow in the Navara just in case, but she made it,a whole 319km with out any issues

on to the pictures

so last month charged battery for the 3rd sunday of the month, wouldnt start,so jump started it from the corsa, let it idle for a good hour or so while my son washed it,sunday moved cars, pulled it out,and then the fun and games started, lumpy idle, battled to get it back up the driveway and in to its parking spot, checked points gap and timing, still lumpy and dies when revving it.closed everything up and went to the dream on wheels show, the following weekend, tried to start it,dead.
since then, another operation on left hand, and another one coming up 1st august once cast comes off,so it will still be standing for a long time

would love to know why it has a lumpy idle and dies while revving it?

any ideas,please let me know,thanks

sounds like your ignition is having troubles
bad spark plugs or dirty? Dodgy condenser? Vacuum hose attached?
