My 1975 Sunroof Baywindow

Post by sean »

Here are a few pics of my latest acquisition. Its a 1975 model, 1800. It is however quite scarce with this factory fitted sunroof. I've seen several lowlight Deluxe's with a sunroof, but never a late baywindow.

At first the bus looks quite faded and tatty, but it is still in original paint. Im so thrilled with this bus, it has some slight rust issues under the front windscreen, but otherwise completely dry and solid. The interior is quite thrashed. The engine and gearbox is missing.

Pics with the bus back at home.

Take a look at this rim, its the worst ive ever seen. Possibly used on a stock car with no tyre.

With the weekend coming up soon, I will get this bus up and running. I have started polishing the original paint and its coming out very nicely. Hopefully by Sunday I can drive it home and share some pics of it, with at least with 4 tyres and paintwork look good again. :hangloose: Hell, these busted rims on the bus are just too hideous.

No, that Splitty had a tree fall on top of it or something. Damage to the roof was very bad.

Did they seal the sunroof up with silicone or similar? :o
If it's too low, you're too old

Yes, they did use silicone. Luckily they didn't do a thorough job of it and I have been able to clean it off. Amazingly, the sunroof is still working. Apparently these factory sunroofs are renowned for stripped and broken mechanisms. I will share some more detailed pics this weekend.

Ok, so Eugene had to come and show me his newly acquired 72 cross over Deluxe sunroof bus today. Also, quite a rare item.

Good find and lucky the sunroof still works , i have been busy with my lowlights sunroof now for three weeks :( its a real pain in the ball :(
Sean make sure all the drain channels are open and not blocked that seems to be the most common problem why these roofs get "siliconed"
My biggest fear is that my wife sells my cars for what i told her they cost !!

Over the past few evenings I have been preparing a fresh motor and gearbox for this bus, Friday night I installed it and finished it all off on Saturday. At the same time I went through cleaning the CV's with new boots, bearings, running gear and shocks. The clutch cable tube had also been broken out which I had to re-weld in place. The entire front section of the wiring loom had been gutted from this bus, but just while stripping spares off a rotten kombi 1 week earlier, I had luckily grabbed the loom. I installed the new loom and got everything wired up and working.

This being a 75 model, it uses the later style flat headlights which are still available new from Hella. I installed these and new taillights. I had a set of rims blasted and powder coated and new tyres fitted.

After setting up everything, I was able to take it home. The bus is going very well. Its good to have a 2L late baywindow going again, I was getting used to these pup 1600's.
