Generator Stator insulation

Post by No More Landy »

Can I remove this stator and have the flaking insulation renewed somewhere?

I stripped it because the brushes were barely making contact and one was so caked that it was stuck in the guide channel.

Yes you can

There is a counter sunk screw from the outside that holds the lamination to the body, its normally a big Phillips head.

Its hard to loosen but it will go, then you can varnish dip the coils and re- bandage it before refitting it.

Good luck.

Super tight.
Tried heat, release spray and impact screwdriver and no luck.
Going to have to drill them out.

I wasn’t lucky with Diesel-Electric here in Cape Town. You might also try Motolek. They proclaim to be official Bosch agents.

If you can not get the right brush, take your sample with and take the next size bigger, then you just size it on a sheet of glass with sandpaper on it.

This I have done hundreds of times for car or electrical motors.

Hi Guys

I seem to remeber hearing that I need to run my generator as a "motor" after a rebuild to generate a magnetic field for the first time.

Anyone can confirm or share the process ?

Ready to swing her over after a few hectic months at work.

Thanks buggyfan.

I hooked her up and ran the motor.
Charge is at 14.2 volts at a bit of revs so all good.
Didn't need to boost the magnetism after all.
Now to resolve a very poorly running engine.
The plug leads I think are still from 1971 so going to change those first and take it from there.

My plug leads also saw beter days…still the originals. The new Bosch OEM leads I bought were crap…I got a set of Bogies, a new rotor and cap and all is well now. You can also look at getting leads from a V8 shop that you cut to size.
