From what I could see it could be a 1200 or 1300 but it's a tricky one. The guy I bought it from is adamant it's a 1600 TP but I don't know.
He had the engine reconditioned in January. Guess I'll just start it up and see.

The intake manifold of the 1200 engine is different to the single port intake manifolds of the later engines. Maybe you can post a picture of the whole engine for further investigation? See differences below:

There is also a possibility that the engine was converted from 1200 to 1300/1600 at some stage.

Thanks for the help. I'll post a picture tonight when I get home.

From this site (http://www.bustopia.com/vw-engine-number-codes.html) it looks like the F motors are 1300 50HP.
Let me get back when I've take a photo. Bought it last night so didn't have time for many photos.
