Beach Buggy Insurance

Post by alants »

Hi Guys,
Bug is about ready to hit the streets .......... but not before I have insurance - 3rd pary fire and theft at least - problem is so far the companies doing insurance on my other vehicles aren't interested ! - not enough value I suppose
Any ideas/advice on this one - or do I have to change everything to a house-holders type policy to get here insured ?

AFAIK no insurance company will insure a buggy anymore. I believe the rules changed in the mid nineties.
Why do we celebrate the guy that invented the wheel??

http://www.rent-a-buggy.co.za/ says they have insurance on their cars, so maybe give them a call and find out who they with. I see no reason to not insure one for 3rd party since you can insure a puma for 3rd party...

next time i'm at my insurance company i will ask...
From fastest to slowest:

Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods
B8 A4 Avant tdi, towing made easy

What about Carprehensive - their ad says something like 65% of vehicles on our roads dont have insurance, and they insure any vehicle etc etc.... maybe give them a try.

Both my buggies are insured with Santam...

I've insured them each, Comprehensive Cover, for R30,000-00 - about the closest ball-park value figure anybody would give me. The premium at that value is R199.70 - but if you only want third party fire, and theft (tp/f/t) cover, the premium drops to R129.90. The bad news, though (there always is bad news) is that the tp/f/t cover excludes windscreens - and with the New! Improved! Sanral roads up here, ever since they started their shenanigans, I've had to replace a windscreen on at least one car in the household every year. My Korando is 14 years old - and for the first 8 years of her life, I never replaced the windscreen. Since then, every year, without fail, a stone/rock has taken out the 'screen - there was something to be said for the way roads USED to be maintained/improved/upgraded, methinks.

It's up to you which way you go. The biggest consideration for me was the windscreen's replacement cost, and how easy it is to source. Which is a question I still need to answer w.r.t. my Aqua... Hopefully not very soon...

Instead of "balance of third party", what "personal liability" insurance are available nowadays?

Insuring the driver instead of the car.

Application would be the guy who have several old cars. He is the only person who drive those cars. (There used to be a saying... there are two things you never lend out... your wife and your car).
So this insurance would exclude fire and theft, but cover owner should he cause an accident.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

Dawie, are you saying or asking?
I for one would like to cover my vehicles for fire and theft, at specified amount and then comprehensive, when I drive it but not sure any insurance company would entertain that :-(

Was told once of an company that insures all your classics as one, seeing you can only drive one at a time.

Will try to find out which one it was.

Cars could still be separately insured against fire and theft if so preferred. Or save that premiums in separate account and be your own insurance.

Thinking about principle of insuring driver against liability instead of car. If not causing accidents... then eventually getting discount.
But insurance companies wont like that.
