Caravelle Engine swap

Post by johanmarais »

Hi

I know this is not aircooled related but I'm not sure if there is another forum where I can get this advice.

Well, I'm considering an engine swap on my 2.1 Waterboxer for the following reasons.

1. Need a bit more power to comfortably tow a trailer all over the country for cycling events.
2. Need more reliability from an engine. I'm wheelchair bound and fixing stuff on the road is just a pain in the .....
3. Need an engine with parts available just about anywhere in the country should it needs fixing.

I wanted to go the Subaru route but then again parts could be a problem.

I talked to Pierre at vdubtech and he mentioned that 2l Golf ADY engine is a good choice and after giving it some research time I'm now sure this is the way to go.

With this in mind, I have some questions and hope some members could help.

Would this engine fit under the decklid without any mod's?
Would this engine be happy with the Caravelle auto box?
I take it Gilo is the place to supply the adaptor plate?
I take it MP9 and a dictator system will work on the ADY engine?

Thanks

I would not think golf a 2lt would be suitable with a auto box but thats my opinion. To find a engine that is going to fit without raising the deck lid I can only think of is the 2.6 Caravelle. There are members on here that can give you the best options but which ever way you go its going to cost you, have you thought about looking at other camper options.

Get the 5 cylinder Audi /Passat CLI motor, its 2222cc and you can hot it up, you get fuel injection and it sits at a slant so it will fit.

Thanks, for the reply Terry.

We don't actually use the Caravelle as a camper so I have not looked into camper options.

I did a Subaru conversion years ago on a trike I used to own, so my heart is pulling real strong in that direction but I'm not sure if the autobox in the Caravelle will cope with the power of a 2.5 Subaru engine.

In my opinion, the golf motor will be worse than the 2.1i. It has less torque and only develops its torque at very high rpm, where the boxer motor develops at very low rpm, this is what you want in a bus.

A 5 cylinder motor or Gilo golf conversion will both involve cutting the engine bay. Your bus was designed for the boxer engines, the later SA build kombis had a raised engine lid for the 5 cylinder motors. There was a golf 1800 motor used in the 1990's by VWSA that involved an engine with special sump and ancillarys that lay heavily on its side to fit under the engine lid. You would have to find one of these if you do not want to not hack the engine bay.

Personally I would look at getting the original motor back up to spec and then possibly look at some tweaks to get it to perform better, BUT I'm no expert and it is only my thinking. It would eliminate any external mods that could affect something else.
Wanted parts:
Left sunvisor
Sink faucet
Exhaust to swap for Beetle exhaust

Johan which model caravelle do you have there? Year model etc ?
Gilo is the place to go for the adapter plate.
As far as fitting it in there I am not sure at all.
Is it is the caravelle I am thinking off the 2.6 engine was a powerful engine but really heavy on the juice but a good engine anyway.
I personally appreciate an original engine but that is just me.
Put the original with upgrades.

Why not get hold of @Tony Z and let him tickle your old motor back to life.

If you see what power his beetle motor puts out, you will not want to go through the hassle of cooling and cutting.

OK lets start here

1. Need a bit more power to comfortably tow a trailer all over the country for cycling events.
2.1 power rated from 90 hp 2.0 golf 110hp standard with MP 9

2. Need more reliability from an engine. I'm wheelchair bound and fixing stuff on the road is just a pain in the .....
pretty tough motor

3. Need an engine with parts available just about anywhere in the country should it needs fixing.
2.0 golf motor parts available at most parts stores countrywide.

Would this engine fit under the decklid without any mod's?
You can run the motor at a slant angle - the last microbusses 1.8 golf motor were built in by Volkswagen
If you run at a slant it will fit you , will need the sump from that motor and oil pumppickup (i think)

Would this engine be happy with the Caravelle auto box?
No Idea - maybee speak to Stuart from Syncro Hospital

I take it Gilo is the place to supply the adaptor plate?
Yes unless you find someone with one on gumtree

I take it MP9 and a dictator system will work on the ADY engine?
MP9 is a very good option - there are a few folks in SA that makeup MP9 short loom, mated to a polo cup mp9 box
We have Allan in Houtbay Cape Town ( look on Gumtree) make sure your intake has 4 seperate injector plugs not just one
