Dome lights .... my 5 day struggle ....help please?

Post by johanmarais »

I've been trying to get my dome lights to work but for the life of me I can't seem to get it to work when the doors are open.

I've chased it down to behind the fuse box and found this holder.

Now I'm not sure if I should be searching for another holder or a relay.

Any advice would be very helpful

No attachment or image,
but as far as I know it shouldn't have any relay. it's a series connection through the door switches through the dome light, and direct to earth.

12V + goes via fuse to "dome lights". According to Haynes manual, this fuse also supplies cigar lighter socket. So if something stuck into this socket caused fuse to blow, interior lights would also loose power.

Interior lights should always have 12v on one terminal- (red wire). One terminal at light goes to chassis-(brown wire). Third wire from interior light goes to front door switches-(brown/white), the wire at sliding door might be green/white. These switches are all in parrallel. At door switch, this makes contact with chassis when door opens.

If an alarm system was added, there might have been extra wires added to door switches.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

At the light you have 3 wires.

The power wire from the fuse.

Then you have the wire from the door switches, as said they are in parallel
Then you have another wire, if you trace it, it does not go far, it is connected to the body a little away from the switch.
The Power wire goes to the one side of the light, away from the switch.
The other two go to the switch on the light, so one way the light will stay on, the other way the doors will control the light, these can be connected any way around.

You may have a bad earth on the one connected to the body some way away from the light, to test this, take a wire from a sure earth point and tough it to the light sw point, the light should come on when the doors are closed.
You can also have bad connections on the light sw itself, so clean them 1st.

Good luck
