Hello,
Rebuild assembly started.
I have a matching (or so they seem) set of barrels and pistons from my spare engine, the on being rebuilt. The pistons however, have no markings on them at all. I lightly sanded the carbon off to find nothing.
Gap from piston to cylinder is 0.1 mm so that is fine, I think.
Is there a special way to find the 'this way to flywheel' Mark?
Marc

Re: no marking on piston to point to flywheel
Hi Marc
If I remember correctly there is a "tab" or arrow cast into the piston below the gudgeon pin opening. Looking from the bottom of the piston. This is on Beetle pistons but could be the same on yours.

Re: no marking on piston to point to flywheel
Yes as the link Herman posted also shows that notch can be taken as the arrow like your drawing.

Re: no marking on piston to point to flywheel
new piston clearance spec is 0.04 to 0.06mm, with a wear limit of 0.2mm.
So you should be OK.

Re: no marking on piston to point to flywheel
I stand under correction here, but I think that notch (balance weight) sits "up" towards the top of the block.

Re: no marking on piston to point to flywheel
HI MARC.
ON THE 2L THERE IS NO OFFSET SO I ASSUME THAT IN REALITY IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH WAY YOU PUT THE WHOLE LOT TOGETHER.
IT IS PROBABLY A GOOD IDEA HOWEVER TO GET INTO THE HABIT OF ALWAYS USING THE ARROWS/TABS TO ORIENT THE PISTONS.
AS MENTIONED EARLIER IN THE POST, IF YOU TURN THE PISTON UPSIDE DOWN YOU WILL NOTICE A TAB/KNOB/ LARGER SIDE ON THE ONE SIDE OF THE PISTON WHERE THE PIN GOES THROUGH. USE THIS AS YOUR ARROW.....IE. POSITION THIS SIDE OF THE PISTON FACING THE FLYWHEEL.
I UNFORTUNATELY DON'T HAVE A PHOTO TO POST BUT YOU'LL SEE IT IMMEDIATELY.
HOPE THIS HELPS CLEAR THINGS UP.
I COULDN'T SEE YOUR PHOTO OR ANYTHING IN THE LINK HERMAN POSTED.
GOOD LUCK.
