Bowdem tube

Post by stoffel92 »

Hi to all.

I need some advise on the bowdem tube. I have done some reseach on the web.
I know it must have a slight bend it it, but mone is straight.

So my question is how do i keep the ben in the tube?
My tube is flexabla, is that normal or does it maen its old and needs replacing?

My main problem is that when i pull away with higher revs than idle the clucth jurks or shudders so bad that it jumps out of gear, but when i pull away without giving gas it does not jurk. I can only give it gas once the clucth is completely released. No problem between gears or when I revaerse

Advise will be greatful
Thanks

You will see that the gearbox side has a tube section on it, this can slide backward and forward.

You take the cable out from the release bearing arm, slide the tube out of the sleeve, place washers over the cable and tube section, then put the cable and tube back into the sleeve, the washers will now cause the tube to have a bend in it.

You need the bend to be between 24 and 45 mm, so add or remove washers till you have it right.

As Retro said, you need a bend in the tube.
The reason that your clutch judders at higher rpm launches is because the gearbox is moving and the bowden tube doesnt have any available bend (or slack) to allow the movement without the clutch being affected. So the box moves, the clutch cable pulls tight and the clutch releases a bit which then allows the gearbox to move back and the clutch then engages again causing the box to move which then pulls the clutch cable tight and the clutch releases a bit which then allows the gearbox to move back and the clutch then engages again causing the box to move which then pulls the clutch cable tight and the clutch releases a bit which then allows the gearbox to move back and the clutch then engages again causing the box to move which then pulls the clutch cable tight and the clutch releases a bit which then allows the gearbox to move back and the clutch then engages again causing the box to move which then pulls the clutch cable tight

lol, but seriously, that is what is happening

Thanks for the advise.
I will try and fit some washers today after work to get the bend right.
Will give some feedback tommorrow.
Thanks allot. Didnt even think to fit so washer and space it away from the fixed arm in order to make the bend

that looks about perfect.
From memory, the bend should be about 30mm from straight

Adjust the wingnut on the back to change where it takes. Don't remove any of your washers etc.
Well done, good job.

The sag in the Bowden tube looks good. The Bentley spec for dimension B, is 25-45mm. Too much sag, can result in stiffness in clutch operation, and excessive cable/tube wear. Start with 25mm, and work your way up. Go for as little as is needed for smooth operation.

As mentioned, the wingnut can be adjusted to obtain the correct clutch pedal free-play. The Bentley spec for clutch pedal free-play, is 10-20mm. See what works best for you.
