Mid 60's boot lid on 70's beetle

Post by FaanP »

Hi,

Can anybody tell me if a 60's beetle boot lid (looking at 66-67) will fit on a a 71 beetle? How much modification is involved to make it fit and did anybody try it yet?

I'm pretty sure I saw it somewhere?

Thanks.

I've never done it. To make it work properly you ideally need your chosen engine cover as well as a matching rear valence.

The hinge mountings will be the same, so I suggest you mount your chosen engine cover and then look to see what mods are required to get it to lock. I would expect that will be the main issue, if you are leaving your stock rear valence in place. Bumper clearance is also a possible issue.

Thanks Fig.

I like the look of the 60's engine cover and the sloped headlights ....

Me too. If I were doing this I'd add the 60s fenders, engine cover and valence, as well as the bumpers. However, another issue is the bumper mountings are different and in a different positoon between 60s and 70s Beetles. Paer of the reason for the shape of the 70s engine cover is because of the heavier bumpers; the engine cover is cropped to clear the rear bumper.
