Air Pressure Window Washer Unit Beetle

Post by No More Landy »

Mine is toast and the air escapes from the Relief Valve port in the cap instead of pressuring the window washer bottle when fitted.

It seems this valve cannot be stripped down.

I tried Shelly's and Volksieworld for second hand units but both say this will be impossible to find.

Do I change to an electric pump with a switch or are these things available anywhere new or used in the Cape?

Ta, James

I may have one available, in Natal. I ship regularly.

Are you set on a local one?

This is the part I am still looking for. (attached picture)

On another note, If I cannot get, can I not just machine a flat plate with a threaded hole for a swage nipple and connect the same hose direct from the tyre into the bottle without this complicated valve as I found a drawing of on the net.

Yes, you can. In fact, on some Beetles, that's exactly how the windscreen washer bottle is pressurised.

Oops! I didn't read your question clearly. I see you already have the type of screen washer bottle that is pressurised by the spare tyre. I suspect that valve is necessary to control the pressure in the screen wash system.

Another guy who offered a replacement from Natal sent me a pic of a different type that looked like it was a hose connected direct to the bottle from the tyre and then just a normal cap on the filling point so not sure how that system could control the pressure. Little bit confused now.

Did some more googling and found that the valve only prevents tire from going flat. So should be ok with swage nipple.

You are correct, the valve is there to maintain some pressure to still be able to use the wheel when needed.

The thing about these window washers are that you never remember to pump the tyre, and when needed you have no spare.

My thinking would be to have the original setup without it working and hide a after market unit somewhere in the spare well.

All sorted and working great - gives a nice strong jet.
I ended up drilling a hole in the center and tapped for a 1/8" BSP swage nipple which I fitted with an o-ring underneath and some thread tape.
Then I tapped an M3 thread in the relief port hole in the cap and fitted a M3 grub screw with thread tape to seal off that port.

I Just had to cut a short piece of the hose off the spray valve in the dashboard as the flare was a bit tired and dripped a little. Refitted by dipping in a cup of boiling water and bob's my uncle.

Tested all fittings with soapy water and good to go.

Chuffed.
