thanks Derek. I am by no means a thorough Purist... I drive a Purple beetle!! but I like the quirkiness of keeping some of the old charms that came with the bus. As i said it adds history to the entirety of the vehicle. Once i can, I will try to fix the current booster, if its not worth saving, will look into a aircooled solution.

whats the current rarity of an aircooled bus booster and its pricing?

You should be able to find a S/H booster at places like Volksieworld or Shelley's in CT, or similar used VW parts dealers in JHB/PTA. Or just post on Kaapse Kombi Kult on FB, etc. The last I bought cost me R 1000 and then another R 1 500 to have it completely overhauled at a brake specialist. I agree that sometimes it's cool to retain the vehicle's charm which came with who knows how many owners over 45 yrs. For that reason I prefer fixing up what needs to be fixed on my kombi's rather than a complete 'restoration' so that it looks like a new vehicle.

Retrovan is on the money with his explanation of why a booster is necessary and desirable and you can always source a reconditioned original booster from a '70's bus if you want to stick to a VW solution.
OMG, here we go again.

Derek, did you read the subject to this thread? It was a question. Yes, it is HIS vehicle, but a question was asked on a open forum on what to do with the brake booster, which I can only assume Bugspray needed advice, why else would anyone ask? Why don't you just purchase a new T6 Derek, because every single other component on a ACVW is also outdated?

Bugspray, to convert to a late baywindow brake system (PROPERLY), you will need the following.

Brake booster
late bay master cylinder (cylinder size differs)
Brake booster bracket and weld it to your existing beam
Vacuum line with non-return valve installed between motor and vacuum unit
Brake pedal rod to fit between pedal shaft and brake booster
Don't forget the balancer Thomas has already mentioned that is also to be fitted.
Also remember as the master cylinder is going to be relocated, so will your steel brake lines
