Beetle Engine Seal and Heater Plates (1971)

Post by No More Landy »

I took my bug to Jurgen at Grandslam who kindly did a once over inspection on his lift to give some advise on the Beetle I bought for my Daughter.

Unfortunately he is booked up for two months so it looks like I will have to rectify the faults myself - may as well learn a bit about the Beetle, but time is always an issue :(

Overall he said my Beetle was good but had some important bits missing.

There are apparently some missing heat deflection plates around and below the engine missing but I can't see from my manual or pics on the net exactly which - he said they are often missing on beetles he has seen and difficult to find.

The rubber engine seal is also missing and I see from the net that they are on the gearbox side and the surrounds of the engine - Is it best I take out my engine to fit these ?

Where would be the best place to shop for a new seal and deflector plates ?

If anyone can share a pic of the plates that surround the cylinder barres/heads that would be great.

The engine seal you can purchase from Pro-Auto rubber in Montague Gardens. It is very difficult to replace it with the engine installed. I would ideally remove the engine to install.

The J plates that's missing under the motor you can purchase from Flat4 Racing in Killarney Gardens. I see you will have a problem though, you have some kind of make up exhaust system that is running straight through where those plates have to go. This means the exhaust system must be modified or go as well.

Ideally I want to fit an original exhaust but not sure what I need to bypass the missing heater boxes that will fit an original silncer with the two tail pipes yet.

Still looking around - will make a turn at above two places

So I got the rubber at Pro-Auto Rubber as suggested, but I hope I got the correct one - guy said there was an earlier type that was a deeper double lip seal and this one I assume is the "Later" type.
Is this correct for the 71 Beetle ?

Does the Lip of the foldover face up or to the ground ?

The simple options are to use J-pipes when using a standard silencer. J pipes are available from Grandslam or flat 4 racing. What exhaust system do you have installed at the moment?

There are now two options, the standard exhaust without the heater box "extra connectors" for R1,400 or wait a week for originals for over R3 K.

Dave at Flat 4 says if I go cheaper option I merely make the hoses from the fan shroud longer to go all the way into the heater box.

Any opinions which Exhaust option is better?

He did explain that the original type of exhaust also removes more heat from the heads I think he said ?

If you really want the heater to work, then you must buy the more expensive silencer with the additional heater chambers.

The engine bay seal in your pic, is for the later model car, and should work fine for your '71. It should however be fitted the opposite way around (lip at the top of the pic, should be at the bottom).

Looking at your first pic in the thread, you are definitely missing deflector tin 12, from the diagram above. It is important to have all tins in place.

Thanks. Just found tin 12 and 13 from the guy I bought the heater boxes from and purchased them at the same time.
Lucky find, as I merely returned there to pick up one of the heater levers I left behind.

I bought a scrap exhaust for almost nothing just to get the two heater connections as per picture attached. As they are merely assembled with fold-over tabs, can I not just transfer to the copy exhaust that don't have them but only cost R1,300 odd ?
