While stripping my Heads to replace push rods and seals, one of the cylinder barrels came out with the head.
Have tapped with wooden hammer and sprayed with penetrating oil but it refuses to come apart.
Any tricks to removing the barrel from the head ?

Re: Cylinder Barrel seized on Head - Beetle
I tried my own idea and heated the Head around the seized barrel with my small LPG torch in the fin area of the head and after feeling the heat had traveled in far enough I started tapping the sides of the barre with my wood hammer and it came adrift quite nicely.
Seems the Aluminium heated faster than the Cast Iron and thus freed itself.

nice one
you'll also find that aly expands more for the same amount of temp change than cast iron does, which will also help

Hi Tony, this doesn't make sense. The piston would expand faster/more than the barrel? Then it will become even more difficult to remove?Tony Z wrote:nice one

@Piet
he wasnt removing the piston from the barrel.... his barrel was stuck inside the head

I will blame my failing eyesight for that misread. At least my physics is not letting me down.Tony Z wrote:@Piet
