Can engine go back with original Type Exhaust and Heater Header's

Post by No More Landy »

Trying to refit my Engine this evening with a lot of blue language between my son and I - and we gave up until our mood get's a chance to recover.

One question, we removed the motor with an aftermarket exhaust and it was easy.

Now that I have an original exhaust box with heater boxes and heater box headers, I cant seem to get the required height for the engine at the rear because of the heater "header" hitting the bodywork before the clutch is high enough to go into the gearbox output shaft.

Is it possible or do I have to remove the exhaust again.

It should go in with exhaust attached. Do u have the tinware in front of the crank pulley installed? If so remove it and pop it on afterwards. Its a tight fit and helps to have the exhaust side a bit lower than the gearbox side and straigten the motor up once pilot shaft can enter the clutch a bit.

Another question, I thought maybe these adaptor pipes may be causing the height restriction that we need to refit.

Are they normally fitted after from the tin side through the rubber seal or from the bottom up ?

My adaptor Pipes I got separate from the actual heater "headers" from a different set of spares but they were so tight I had to heat the tin and freeze the adaptor pipes in my freezer to get them in. I have taken them off again and polished them in the lathe so they fit a little easier now.

I think I will leave them off until the engine hopefully goes in better without them reducing the height of entry.

A fully assembled beetle engine with original exhaust should go in. It does take some time though... And I work alone.

Got her back in finally but needed that little bit extra tilt by taking off the left side heater box header tins that was catching on the new rubber seal in the engine bay.
Chuffed to get her back in place.
