What you do is the following.

Keep carb on car, loosen all by two opposite screws on float chamber, then turn over the engine with distributor cap off and all parts in the float chamber.

Give it a good few turns to allow the pump to fill float chamber.

Then carefully remove the two screws, and lift the float chamber top with float out of the carb.

Then measure from lip to fuel.

Thanks Herman
Is there a reason to leave out some top screws while cranking engine ?

Take note that the 14mm distance mentioned by Herman, (previous page), only applies to the twin carb 34PDSIT family.

For 30PICT this is shown as 19.5mm- 20.5mm, and German 34Pict (which is closer to original 31PICT) as: 17-19mm.
(Source Bentley manual for kombi).
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

No .. Just easy to remove, and also to see if it floods, when your needle and seat do not shut off.

Dawie is correct,

according to most on The Samba, the best setting for your carb is 19 mm +- 1mm

Good luck

So my reading was 24 mm. The Cu washer was about 1.5 mm thick so i put the thinnest washer i had but still only 23 mm max depth reading. Not much more to do so to hell with it. She will just have to run like this for now.
